Two Wichita men charged with first-degree murder in weekend shooting death

Two Wichita men were charged Thursday with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in southeast Wichita last weekend.

Dametrius Williams, 20, and Christopher Cooper, 19, were charged in Sedgwick County District Court. Their preliminary hearing is set for July 10.

Williams is being held in Sedgwick County jail on a $1 million bond; Cooper is jail on a $500,000 bond.

Their arrests followed an incident on Saturday in the 900 block of South Cypress – south of Lincoln and west of Webb Road – where Juan “Gordo” Orona, 20, was shot to death about 3 a.m., police have said.

About 100 uninvited people showed up at a house party, including members of rival gangs, according to police. An argument broke out in the front yard and quickly escalated into a physical disturbance.

One shot was fired that hit a 17-year-old boy in the upper right chest. He ran inside the house and hid in the closet. He was later treated at a hospital.

The dispute spread to a few houses away and involved occupants of two vehicles, police said. More shots were fired, and one struck Orona in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cooper was arrested early Sunday, and Williams was arrested Monday evening.
