Second arrest made in fatal house party shooting in southeast Wichita

A second arrest has been made in connection with the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in southeast Wichita early Saturday morning, police said Tuesday.

Dametrius Williams, 20, was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail shortly before 7 p.m. Monday following questioning at City Hall, records show. He is being held on $1 million bond on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of Juan “Gordo” Orona, who was shot shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday as he sat in a parked car in the 900 block of South Cypress, Lt. Randy Reynolds said. That’s south of Lincoln and a few blocks west of Webb Road.

Christopher Cooper, 19, was arrested and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail shortly before 4:30 a.m. Sunday on suspicion of first-degree murder in the same shooting. He is being held on $500,000 bond.

Orona was the second person shot during clashes that erupted at a house party on Cypress, police have said.

Perhaps 100 people showed up to the party uninvited by the host. That included members of rival gangs. An argument broke out in the front yard about people showing up uninvited. The argument escalated into a physical disturbance, police have said.

A gunshot was fired, striking a 17-year-old boy in the upper right chest. He ran inside the house and hid in a closet. The boy was later taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive his wound.

The dispute spread down the street, a few houses away from the party, involving occupants of two vehicles, police have said. Several more shots were fired. Orona was hit in the head and pronounced dead at the scene.
