They took their young daughter to Chuck E. Cheese for a bite to eat Sunday, police say, but they never made it inside the northeast Wichita restaurant.

The man and woman decided to do some heroin in the front seat before going into the restaurant at 3223 N. Rock Road, Lt. Joe Schroeder said. Police found them passed out at about 4:15 p.m. Sunday when a concerned passerby called 911 to express concern for the welfare of the young child in the back seat.

Their 3-year-old girl was asleep in the back seat and unharmed, Schroeder said.

“We do come across parents who are driving drunk with kids in the car, using drugs in their presence...,” he said in an e-mail response to questions. “This case was a little bizarre due to all the circumstances.”

The 31-year-old man and 22-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of drug offenses and child endangerment. The girl was placed in protective custody.

The woman denied using heroin and insisted she was napping, Schroeder said.
