Man found dead atop freight elevator
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly made reference to the Wichita Police Department’s total number of open suspicious-death cases. Police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow confirmed that the death in the elevator at Hillcrest Apartments isn’t considered suspicious.
A man was found dead atop a freight elevator inside Hillcrest Apartments, 115 S. Rutan, Saturday morning.
The incident occurred sometime between 7 and 8:42 a.m. and the man was pronounced dead at 8:50 a.m., according to police reports.
Wichita police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow said Monday that the incident appeared to be accidental, but that the coroner’s office is still investigating.
Woodrow also said she did not know how far the man had fallen down the elevator shaft. The building is 10 stories tall.
