Investigators searching for clues about human skeleton found north of Wichita (+video)

Investigators on Thursday continued to comb a wooded area north of Wichita for clues about how human skeletal remains ended up there.

A hunter found the remains in a wooded area near 61st Street North and Hillside and notified the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

A team of investigators have been meticulously collecting the bones and other evidence from the scene since then.

“Animals have gotten to the skeleton and moved different parts of it,” Sheriff’s Capt. Greg Pollock said Thursday next to areas of the woods that have been sectioned off in grids.

Students from Wichita State University’s anthropology department have been assisting with the search for and collection of bones, he said. Human bones have been taken to the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center for testing.

The age and gender of the person are still unknown, Pollock said. Investigators aren’t sure at this point how or when the person died.

“Our big thing is, is this a crime or is this a natural cause?” Pollock said.

Investigators are working the scene as if a crime occurred so they can build the strongest case possible if it becomes necessary, he said.

“We’re waiting on the assets from the science world to let us know what direction we need to go,” Pollock said.

Clothing was also found at the scene, Pollock said, but he would not divulge details.
