Man critically burned in south Wichita garage fire
A 47-year-old man is in critical condition after being burned in a south Wichita garage fire Thursday evening, according to a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher.
Joe Bickel, a battalion chief with the Wichita Fire Department, said firefighters were called to the 1700 block of South Green around 8 p.m. Thursday.
The man was in a detached garage when the fire began, Bickel said.
When firefighters arrived, the garage was fully engulfed in flames, and the man was outside, trying to extinguish the fire.
After firefighters had put out the fire, they realized the man had burn injuries to his hands and face, as well as smoke inhalation injuries, Bickel said.
The man was taken to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in critical condition, according to the dispatcher.
The garage was deemed a total loss. Bickel did not have a damage estimate but said all of the contents in the garage were destroyed.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
