Kansas Humane Society focuses on pets for Black Friday

Blackie is a 9-month-old Labrador retriever who’s the life of the party.

He’ll be free to adopt on Black Friday at the Kansas Humane Society.

As big-box stores sell toys, cellphones and TVs, the shelter is having its own Black Friday sale. Black or mostly black pets, who often get looked over and passed by, will be free from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Dogs 6 months and older and kittens of any color will be $50. Adult cats are always free, though donations are accepted.

On Thursday, lots of black animals were awaiting a home.

Fifi, a 4-month-old domestic medium-hair kitten, was looking to be adopted, as was Fergus, likely her brother at also 4 months old. Two-month-old Kipper, a domestic shorthair kitten, needed a home, too.

On the dog side, there was Adam, a 2-year-old pit bull mix, described as a goofball. Bear, a mix of Labrador retriever and German shorthaired pointer, is a year and a half and the life of the party, according to the society’s personality assessment.

Harvey, a 4-year-old border collie, is a go-getter who needs a home.

Black animals often are overlooked at shelters in part because of superstition. The shelter has been having a Black Friday sale the past few years to garner interest in the pets.

The shelter is at 3313 N. Hillside near K-96 and Hillside.

Toys, treats and other goodies will be 20 percent off at the shelter’s store.
