Mom, son remain critical after fatal Wichita house fire
A mother and her youngest son remained in critical condition late Friday afternoon from injuries sustained in the previous day’s fatal fire in south Wichita, a spokeswoman for Via Christi Hospital St. Francis said.
The mother, 27, and her 3-year-old son were injured after a fire broke out about 4 a.m. Wednesday in their upstairs apartment in a two-story house at 1343 S. Water. The mother’s 9-year-old son was found dead in his bedroom, authorities have said.
A family member identified the 9-year-old as Jaden Nunn, who was a fourth-grader at Washington Elementary.
The cause of the fire at the 114-year-old frame house is still under investigation.
The Sedgwick County coroner hadn’t completed an autopsy as of Thursday, a county spokeswoman said.
If the autopsy confirms Jaden’s death was caused by the fire, he will be the eighth person and first child to die in a fire this year in Wichita, authorities have said.
