A young would-be robber with an unusual weapon attempted to rob a Wichita QuikTrip on Sunday.

The would-be robber walked into the QuikTrip at 1610 E. Lincoln, at Hydraulic, shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday and confronted the lone clerk with a paint scraper, said Sgt. Roger Runft, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.

“He stated it was a robbery,” Runft said. “The clerk was a little surprised because he estimated the age of the robber to be between 10 and 12 years of age. A small-statured white male.”

The clerk asked the boy what he wanted.

“The individual stated he wanted cigarettes,” Runft said. “The clerk asked him for I.D. due to age. He stated ‘I do not need an I.D. because this is a robbery.’”

The clerk then stared the would-be robber down, police said.

“He got nervous and left on foot in the area,” Runft said.

Wichita police are searching the store’s surveillance tapes for more information.

“We will be looking at it to see which neighborhood juvenile will be held accountable for that incident,” Runft said.
