Man critically injured in shooting by deputy near 143rd East, 31st South
A man in his 30s is in critical condition after he was shot by a Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy in the 14600 block of East 31st Street South, a Sedgwick County emergency dispatcher said.
That’s just east of 143rd Street East, near the Butler County line.
Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. Lin Dehning gave this account:
A deputy was investigating someone who seemed suspicious Tuesday afternoon in the 14600 block of East 31st Street when the deputy fired.
Dehning said the deputy notified dispatch that “shots were fired and the suspect was down.”
The suspicious character call came in around 4:20 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office was trying to determine whether someone in the area called it in or whether the deputy noticed the man and investigated on his own, Dehning said.
The man was taken to Wesley Medical Center.
The Sheriff’s Office is working the case. An investigator with the district attorney’s office was also on the scene Tuesday afternoon, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was notified, Dehning said.
He did not have information about the man’s past history or about the deputy’s tenure with the Sheriff’s Office.
