Man killed in head-on collision in Butler County was Wichitan, 19

Authorities have identified the person killed Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision in Butler County as 19-year-old Leon S. Williams of Wichita.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said Williams was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup west on U.S. 400 when he crossed into oncoming traffic in a marked no-passing zone. Williams’ vehicle collided with an eastbound semitrailer at 3:47 p.m., the highway patrol said.

The impact forced the semi into a ditch, where it rolled onto the driver’s side.

Williams’ truck came to rest facing west in the westbound lanes of U.S. 400, the highway patrol said.

Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, a Butler County dispatcher said Saturday.

The driver of the semi, 56-year-old Randy N. Franklin of Pratt, was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center in serious condition. Franklin reported pain in his upper right arm and had a nosebleed at the time he was transported, according to emergency radio traffic.

The collision occurred about three miles west of Leon, the highway patrol said in a crash report.
