16-year-old’s gunshot wound in leg was self-inflicted, police say

A 16-year old boy walked into the Wesley Medical Center emergency room around 1 a.m. Friday with a gunshot wound to his leg, police said.

He said the gunshot was from a drive-by shooting near his home in the 700 block of South Hunter. Police officers went to the area to investigate the shooting, but as the investigation unfolded and officers talked with the 16-year old’s mother, the boy changed his story.

The 16-year old eventually admitted that he shot himself in the leg while at home, police said.

The boy and his mother cooperated with the investigation, and when police went to the home they found two handguns. One was reportedly stolen and the other was defaced of its serial numbers, police said.

Police said the 16-year old had a criminal record that did not allow him to possess a firearm.

They took the him into custody on suspicion of firearm charges after being treated for the wound.
