Jury finds 18-year-old guilty in rape of 76-year-old Wichita woman

A teen on trial for raping a 76-year-old woman last year was found guilty Friday.

A Sedgwick County jury convicted 18-year-old Marquatesz R. Redmon on seven counts connected to the woman’s assault, including rape, aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery and criminal threat. The verdict was delivered after 2 p.m. in the courtroom of District Judge Gregory Waller.

Redmon will be sentenced Nov. 13.

Redmon stood accused of raping the woman during a break-in at her south Wichita home on June 7, 2013. He was 17 at the time of the crimes but was prosecuted as an adult.

The woman testified during a court hearing last August that her attacker, one of two intruders that night, held a handgun to her head and threatened to kill her if she called police. Although the woman was unable to identify her rapist, Wichita police said her DNA was found on Redmon’s underwear after he was arrested.

He was taken into custody about two blocks from her house.

The other intruder, John Edward Thompson Jr., 19, will be sentenced Thursday for attempted kidnapping, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery after pleading guilty in July.

A third defendant, Jessica Ward, will be sentenced Oct. 31 on one count of aiding a felon.
