‘Great Amazing Race’ date and location changed
“The Great Amazing Race” that had been scheduled for this Saturday at Chisholm Creek Park has been postponed until Oct. 11 and the location changed to Central Riverside Park.
The touring “adventure footrace” based on “The Amazing Race” television show was supposed to take place Sept. 27. People who registered for that date have been notified and offered full refunds if they can’t make the rescheduled event, race founder Greg Benton said Wednesday.
The race now will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 11 at Central Riverside Park, 720 N. Nims. Other activities were going to be taking place this Saturday at Chisholm Creek Park, David McGuire of the city’s Park and Recreation Department said, and when he saw what “The Great Amazing Race” would entail, he recommended to Benton that Riverside would work better anyway.
The race involves an adult teamed up with a child to navigate a 1-mile course featuring eight challenges. Kids from kindergarten through 12th grade can take part. Teams can run, jog or walk the trail. Challenges at each station are based on the age of the child and fitness levels, and success is based mainly on how well teammates work together, Benton said.
Riverside Park has a walking track that makes it a natural for the event, McGuire said.
The entry fee is $40 per team in advance or $50 at the race. Winners in each division receive a medal; the top 25 finishers qualify to take part in a national race, one of which is in Kansas City in May.
Challenges could include laundry-basket leap frog, face painting according to a guide, or a cross-country tandem course, Benton said.
Racers can receive a mulligan/time-saver token for the race by donating two pairs of used sneakers or running shoes for the pediatric-cancer Max Cure Foundation, or tokens can be purchased (one per team) for $10 in advance or $15 on race day.
