One dead, two hurt in fiery crash near Garden Plain, Sedgwick County Sheriff says
One person is dead and two others are injured after a crash just south of Garden Plain, according to a release from the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to the crash at 39th South and 279th West just before 2 a.m. on Saturday, Lt. Tim Myers said in the release. That’s about 4 miles south of Garden Plain, and about 22 miles west of downtown Wichita.
When deputies arrived, they saw the two-vehicle wreck west of that intersection.
One of the vehicles, a Toyota Rav4, was “fully engulfed in flames” while “partially in the west bound lanes,” Myers said. The other vehicle, a Ford F250 pickup truck, was in the middle of the road.
After Sedgwick County Fire extinguished the Toyota Rav4 fire, one person was found inside. That person was pronounced dead at 2:12 a.m. by county EMS.
The two people in the Ford F250 pickup were taken to Wesley Hospital with injuries.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation. Myers said the F250 was traveling eastbound on 39th Street South, while the Toyota was traveling westbound on the same road. The drivers then collided head on.
“It is unknown at this time if alcohol or speed was a factor in the accident,” Myers said in the release. The crash is still under investigation.
The age or gender of those involved has not been released. Myers said no other information will be released until Monday.
