With Wichita pediatric surgeon Kimberly Molik leaving in early August for Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, hospitals are trying to find physicians to temporarily fill that specialty.
Molik has practiced in Wichita for the past eight years and is a part of Wichita Surgical Specialists, an independent physician group.
According to the Medical Society of Sedgwick County, there are no other general pediatric surgeons in Wichita.
Wesley Medical Center has recruited several temporary pediatric surgeons to fill in until the end of the year, a spokeswoman said.
A spokeswoman for Via Christi said its Wichita hospitals do not yet have temporary physicians to cover Molik’s duties, but they are speaking with their current surgeons about what they feel is within their capabilities.
“I’m really sad to go,” Molik said in a phone interview.
“I have loved living and working in Wichita all these years and I’m so grateful to all the families that entrusted their kids to me and I hope I’ve served them well.”
She has served as assistant medical director for the pediatric intensive care unit and pediatric medical director for trauma services at Via Christi, according to the Wichita Surgical Specialist website.
She received her medical degree from Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago.
