Kansas’s largest brewer is hopping up its production and adding a taphouse in the Little Apple.
Tallgrass Brewing Company announced it is acquiring and converting a 60,000-square-foot factory near Manhattan Regional Airport that will triple its capacity to 3 million gallons per year. Last year’s record production was 365,000 gallons.
In addition, owners and founders Jeff and Tricia Gill are opening Tallgrass Taphouse in downtown Manhattan in a building formerly occupied by Jo-Ann Fabric.
“The taphouse will have a small-scale brewing operation, which gives us a perfect opportunity to get feedback on new beers we want to try,” Jeff Gill told The Star. “Downtown Manhattan is really booming and it’s great to be part of that as well.”

Gill is looking for a November opening date for bringing the new factory online and opening the doors to the brewpub, which will be a full-service restaurant.
Tallgrass opened in 2007 and has seen sales skyrocket since switching from bottles to pint cans. It was one of the first breweries outside Colorado to put craft beer in cans.
Tallgrass’ most popular beers include Buffalo Sweat, an oatmeal cream stout; 8-Bit pale ale; and Velvet Rooster, a Belgian-style tripel. The beers are widely available at liquor stores in Kansas and Missouri.
