Kansas native Randall Dee Hubbard to receive Horatio Alger award

Randall Dee Hubbard, who owned Safelite Auto Glass in Wichita before moving on to own and run larger companies and horse-racing tracks, has been selected as one of the 2014 winners of the Horatio Alger Award.

The award, presented by the nonprofit Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, recognizes business leaders who overcome significant personal challenges to achieve success and who demonstrate a commitment to philanthropy and higher education. About 200 have received the award.

Hubbard has donated heavily to Butler Community College, which he attended, and to Wichita State University for decades.

The induction will be in April.

Hubbard worked as an ice delivery boy until the advent of electric refrigerators after World War II. He studied at Butler Community College before becoming general manager and ultimately president at Safelite. He later created and ran glass company AFG and bought and revived several horse racing tracks. Hubbard helped to establish Bighorn Development, an exclusive residential development and private golf club in California in 1990.
