Brett Seacat moved to out-of-state prison

Former Sedgwick County sheriff’s Deputy Brett Seacat has been moved to an out-of-state prison to serve his life sentence for murdering his wife and setting his house on fire with his two young children inside.

Kansas Department of Corrections spokesman Jeremy Barclay said Monday that Seacat’s transfer follows a protocol designed to prevent inmates with law enforcement backgrounds from serving time with other inmates they may have had a role in incarcerating. Corrections records show that Seacat was transferred from the El Dorado Correctional Facility on Friday, but Barclay said his new state of residence was not being disclosed because of safety concerns.

Seacat, 37, was sentenced in August to life plus six years and three months in prison for first-degree murder, aggravated arson and two counts of child endangerment. He was charged with murdering 34-year-old Vashti Seacat on April 30, 2011, and setting a fire that destroyed the couple’s Kingman house while their sons, then 2 and 4, were inside.

Brett Seacat and his sons escaped the fire unharmed.
