No, you haven’t missed it. Today’s the day that the Planters NUTmobile rolls in to the Wichita area. And I can tell you from experience, it’s worth a visit just to hear the crew’s one zillion nut puns.
The crew’s “east to west nut cracking fest” commences this afternoon in Newton, and it will travel to a Wal-Mart in another nearby town every day through Sunday.
We visited earlier this week with the three recent college graduates who were hired in June to drive the NUTmobile around the center of the United States. They all have real names, but their nut names are Legume Liam, Jacashewlyn and Pistachiara. They’ll be manning the nut until next June and they take turns performing the car’s various nut duties from city to city.
It’s a crazy job, driving that nut, and they get all manners of honks, waves and gesticulations as they drive down the highways. People who go to see them can pose with the peanut, meet Mr. Peanut and get nut samples if they’re willing to shout, “I love Planters!”
Never miss a local story.
The NUTmobile is eco-friendly, say the “three nutscateers,” and it has the ability to run on peanut oil. It also has a tiny wind turbine hidden up front that charges the battery as well as solar panels on top.
And in case you wondered, yes, the NUTmoblers and the Oscar Mayer Wienermobilers do meet up and party whenever their paths cross.
