‘Cirque Ziva’ at Kansas Star Casino

For more than three decades, China’s Golden Dragon Acrobats company has toured the United States year-round, the only Chinese troupe to do so. They’ve sold out venues on Broadway, and now they’re bringing their high-flying talents to the Kansas Star Casino, where you can get a front-row seat to high-flying acrobatic feats. “Cirque Ziva” will also showcase traditional Chinese dance and costumes.

Hot Club of Cowtown at Barleycorn’s

Bearing no relation to the old-school nickname for Wichita, Hot Club of Cowtown has spent nearly two decades crafting western swing music that would fit right in at a Paris club or a hoedown. That eclectic mix of styles will find a home at Barleycorn’s on Tuesday night. Anyone who wants a break from traditional country acts should check it out.

Kevin Gates at the Cotillion

This rapper from Baton Rouge, La., has released 14 mix tapes since 2006 and was recently featured on songs with Young Thug and 2 Chainz, among others. Gates also released his first full-length album at the end of January. Wichita rap fans who enjoy Gates’ southern style can see him at the Cotillion on Tuesday.

Jessica Day George book signing

New York Times best-selling author Jessica Day George will be at Watermark Books & Cafe on Saturday to read and sign her book “Fridays With the Wizards,” the latest in a fantasy series about Princess Celie and her friends going on adventures. The author has written many works for young readers, including “Dragon Spear,” “Princess of Glass” and “Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow.”

Arlo Guthrie at The Orpheum

Like his father Woody, Arlo Guthrie has become something of a folk music icon over the past half-century. His breakthrough hit was “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree,” an 18-minute-long satirical piece that has since become a Thanksgiving mainstay. In fact, he’s coming to Wichita on a tour that celebrates the song’s 50th anniversary.

Society of Composers conference at Friends University

The Society of Composers Inc. exists to promote and perform new music from composers in and out of academia. If you appreciate the art of writing and playing music, check out the society’s conference at Friends University this weekend, which features dozens of pieces played across 10 concerts. There will also be presentations on a variety of topics, like the use of color in music notation and biomusicology.
