Halstead volleyball team wins program’s first Kansas high school state championship

The dream season for the Halstead volleyball team finished with a storybook ending.

In the program’s first state tournament appearance since 1991, the Dragons won their first Kansas high school state championship ever on Saturday by claiming the Class 3A title at Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Halstead polished off a 43-2 season with a dominant second day in Hutchinson, sweeping Neodesha (25-19, 25-15) in the semifinals and Nemaha Central (25-23, 25-22) in the finals.

With senior setter Dalaina Schutte running the show, Halstead’s offense thrived with hitters like sophomore Bailey Bernal, junior Katharine Engel and sophomore Jordy Schroeder.

Other members of the championship team included junior Daynica Euwer, senior Sloane Linton, sophomore Piper Schroeder, freshman Annie Williams, senior Peyton Wendling, junior Tess Williams, junior Ainsley Farmer and junior Thea Boese.

Class 6A

Final: Mill Valley def. Blue Valley West, 25-12, 20-25, 25-10. Third: Olathe West def. Manhattan, 25-12, 25-22. Semis: Blue Valley West def. Olathe West, 13-25, 25-20, 25-22; Mill Valley def. Manhattan, 25-13, 25-12.

Class 5A

Final: St. Thomas Aquinas def. Topeka Seaman, 25-22, 20-25, 25-9. Third: St. James Academy def. Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 25-15, 25-10. Semis: Topeka Seaman def. Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23; St. Thomas Aquinas def. St. James Academy, 27-29, 25-22, 25-20.

Class 4A

Final: Bishop Miege def. Rock Creek, 25-22, 25-18. Third: Topeka Hayden def. McPherson, 21-25, 25-15, 25-16. Semis: Bishop Miege def. McPherson, 25-10, 25-21; Rock Creek def. Topeka Hayden, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20.

Class 3A

Final: Halstead def. Nemaha Central, 25-23, 25-22. Third: Hoisington def. Neodesha, 25-19, 25-13. Semis: Halstead def. Neodesha, 25-19, 25-15; Nemaha Central def. Hoisington, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23.

Class 2A

Final: Maranatha Academy def. Valley Heights, 25-23, 25-19. Third: Inman def. Ellinwood, 25-21, 16-25, 25-18. Semis: Valley Heights def. Inman, 26-24, 25-21; Maranatha Academy def. Ellinwood, 25-21, 16-25, 25-18.

Class 1A Division 1

Final: Little River def. Centralia, 25-18, 25-14. Third: Clifton-Clyde def. Flinthills, 25-20, 25-23. Semis: Centralia def. Clifton-Clyde, 25-22, 25-15; Little River def. Flinthills, 25-16, 25-19.

Class 1A Division 2
