Full recap of how Wichita teams finished at Kansas high school volleyball state tournament

Following the conclusion of the 2022 Kansas high school volleyball state tournaments, Varsity Kansas has you covered with a full recap for all of the Wichita-area teams in action.

Class 6A state volleyball recap

City League champion Wichita Northwest finished 0-3 in pool play with losses to Lawrence Free State, Blue Valley North and Mill Valley (in 3 sets). The Grizzlies were led this season by seniors Brailee Bogle, Payton Benoit, Grace Dickerson, Alexandra Workman, Daetyn Bogle and also had contributions from junior Nina Mitchell, junior Madison Godwin and freshman Brooklyn Benoit.

Class 5A state volleyball recap

Andover Central was the only other area team to score a win at state, sweeping Bishop Carroll, 25-22, 26-24, in pool play with losses to Hutchinson and St. Thomas Aquinas. The Jaguars (34-9) were led by seniors Allie Paulsen and Maddi Amekporfor with the rest of the nucleus made up of underclassmen Willow Deckinger, Hayden Snodgrass, Jordyn Washington, Gretta Stover, Emma Geier and Paighton Crumley.

Bishop Carroll capped off another season that ended in the state tournament led by seniors Ally Larkin, Lillie Gorges, Emma Stallbaumer, Grace Long, Lacey Wise and Mariah Farber with support from underclassmen like Reece Daughtery, Olivia Nicoli, Allyson Orth, Avery McCorry and Brea Martin. The Golden Eagles (28-12) lost pool play games to St. Thomas Aquinas, Andover Central and Hutchinson.

Hutchinson was the lone area team to advance to the second day and won the third-place match in a sweep over Topeka Seaman, 25-16, 25-18. The Salthawks topped Andover Central and Bishop Carroll in pool play, then lost a 3-set match with St. James Academy in the semifinals.

Maize South finished with a 31-8 record and another state berth, losing pool play matches to Topeka Seaman, Lansing and St. James Academy. The Mavericks were led by seniors Avery Lowe, Isabella Johnson and Mallory Pruitt and a strong underclassmen group that featured Camdyn Stucky, Gracie Morrow, Jillian Gregory, Jenna Sokoll, Carly Koster, Sydney Lamb, Cece Young and Ava Miller.

Class 4A state volleyball recap

The quest for a perfect season and to repeat as state champions for Andale was ended by state power Bishop Miege, which handed Andale its only two losses of the season — the first in pool play, the second in the 4A championship match. The finals proved to be epic, but Miege prevailed 32-30 in the second game to take the victory. Andale finished with a 42-2 record, including an impressive sweep of Circle, 25-12, 25-19, in the semifinals. Andale was led this season by seniors McKenzie Fairchild, Maddie Schrandt, Emery May, Kyri Kerschen, Camryn Winter, Jenna Kuepker, Jaycee Cates and Faith Molitor with help from underclassmen Grace Rowland and Hayden Grimes.

Circle finished off an impressive 38-5 season under coach Michelle Nibarger by winning the third-place match over Louisburg 25-12, 26-24. The T-Birds went 3-0 in pool play on the first day, winning matches over Louisburg, Tonganoxie and Clay Center, before losing to Andale in the semifinals and topping Louisburg again for the state trophy. Circle was led by seniors Lyric Edgerle, Hailee Schropp, Sydney Johnson and Addison Haskins with underclassmen like Jacqueline Corcoran, Reagan Smith, Mia Fox, Katelyn Paul and Taylor Russell.

Class 3A state volleyball recap

Cheney secured another state trophy for its collection, winning the third-place match over Riverton in a 3-set thriller, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22. The Cardinals finished off a 38-6 season with a 2-1 record in pool play with wins over Beloit and Smoky Valley and a loss to Nemaha Central, then lost to eventual champion Heritage Christian in the semifinals. Cheney was led by seniors Campbell Hague, Anna Martin, Elina Bartlett, Leah Durr and Hadley Pipkin with underclassmen like Alex Bittner, Jailyn Adolph, Peyton McCormick, Reese Hedstrom and Taryn Bennett.

Smoky Valley finished the season with a 32-11 record and another appearance at the state tournament. The Vikings lost pool play matches to Nemaha Central, Cheney and Beloit.

Class 2A state volleyball recap

Garden Plain finished off a 30-12 season with another berth in the state tournament, losing pool play matches to Inman, Smith Center and Valley Heights. The Owls were led by seniors Molly Zoglman, Sydney Puetz, Ryleigh Stuhlsatz, Celia Puetz and Madelyn Rolfs with underclassmen Kaylor Wasinger, Haidyn Thompson, Alayna Hoheisel and Ava Mies.

Hillsboro completed a dominant 44-1 season with its best play at the state tournament, sweeping every opponent en route to a Class 2A state championship. It was sweet redemption for the Trojans, which lost in the state finals last year and won their first state title since 2013. Hillsboro swept the competition in pool play with wins over Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan, Jefferson County North and Meade, then dispatched Inman in the semifinals and beat Smith Center, 25-12, 25-13, in the championship match. The Trojans were led this season by seniors Kori Arnold, Ella Suderman, Kirsten Kluver, Dmyia Cox and Makenna Reed with underclassmen Zaylee Werth, Savannah Shahan, Kingzley Ratzlaff, Anslee Brewer

Inman advanced to the second day of the state tournament, but lost in the third-place match to Jefferson County North. The Teutons finished 2-1 in pool play with wins over Garden Plain and Valley Heights with a loss to Smith Center, then lost to Hillsboro in the semifinals.

Class 1A Division 1 state volleyball recap

Flinthills reached the state championship match, but lost in a pool-play rematch with Little River in three sets once again. The Mustangs finished with a 40-4 record after topping Olpe and Spearville in pool play, then Doniphan West in a 3-set semifinal victory to set up the championship showdown. Flinthills was led by seniors Karly Girty, Taren Lakin, Madison Alvord, Laura Scribner with underclassmen Harlee Randall, Rylie Wight, Emily Scribner, Kolby Holcomb and Paige Corter.

Little River won its first state volleyball championship since 1984 with a perfect showing at the Class 1A Division 1 state tournament. Little River capped off a 40-4 season with pool play wins over Spearville, Olpe and Flinthills before a 3-set semifinal victory over Pretty Prairie and another 3-set victory in the championship match over Flinthills, 25-11, 18-25, 25-9. Little River was led by senior Mea Debaere and underclassmen Alaina Eck, Aubrey Olander, Ashley Stephenson, Havanah Olander, Kami Grasser, Chenzi Debaere, Kate Ellwood, Adelynne Strecker and Lucy Wright.

Pretty Prairie advanced to the second day of the state tournament, but lost in the third-place match to Doniphan West. The Bulldogs went 2-1 in pool play with wins over St. Francis and Sylvan-Lucas and a loss to Doniphan West before losing to Little River in 3 sets in the semifinals in what turned out to be a 38-7 season. Pretty Prairie was led by Bailey Young, Emma Hendrickson, Copper Collins, Trinity Kruse, Joley Harbaugh, Carlin Stucky and Leah Detter.

Class 1A Division 2 state volleyball recap

Attica captured a third-place state trophy with a 3-set win over Beloit-St. John’s Tipton in the third-place match at the state tournament. The Bulldogs advanced to the second day with a 2-1 record in pool play with wins over Wheatland-Grinnell and South Central and a loss to Hanover, then lost to eventual champion Lebo in the state semifinals to cap off a 41-5 season. Attica was led by seniors Allie Blurton, Sidney Swingle, Brenna Ricke and Kendra Nelson with underclassmen Chloe Traffas, Zoie Redgate, Isabel Alexander and Ava Dark.

Hutchinson Central Christian finished off a 28-13 season with another appearance in the state tournament, finishing 1-2 in pool play with a victory over Ingalls.
