Kansas high school state volleyball results: Cheney advances to Class 3A semifinals
The Cheney volleyball team punched its ticket to the second day of the Class 3A state tournament hosted at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, securing a spot in the semifinals after finishing 2-1 in pool play on Friday.
For the fourth time in the last six seasons, Cheney (39-3) play in the state semifinals when the Cardinals take on Smoky Valley (40-3) at 9 a.m. Saturday. It will be a rematch of last season’s one-off quarterfinals match that Smoky Valley won to end Cheney’s season.
Friday proved to be a nerve-wracking day for the Cardinals.
Cheney opened the day with a back-and-forth match that went down to the final points against Nemaha Central, as the Cardinals were able to prevail both times in a straight-set victory, 25-21, 25-23.
Next up proved to be the match of the day and the victory that ultimately sent the Cardinals through to the second day of the state tournament. Cheney actually dropped the first set to Goodland, 25-22, and with its season on the line, the Cardinals won the next set, 25-12, then rallied for an epic 27-25 win in the third and decisive set.
Cheney’s attack this season has been run by senior Brooklyn Wewe with the top targets of senior Olivia Albers, junior Campbell Hague, sophomore Alex Bittner, junior Anna Martin and senior Lacy Luehrs, while senior Korri Lies and sophomore Jailyn Adolph have helped with back-row defense.
Cheney’s lone blemish of the day came in the third and final match against top-ranked Olathe Heritage Christian in a 25-19, 25-17 loss.
After losing a heartbreaker in the 3A state championship match last season, Smoky Valley is back with a vengeance and didn’t drop a set in a 3-0 day in pool play on Friday with wins over Riverton, Eureka and Beloit. Smoky Valley will play Cheney in one semifinal, while Heritage Christian will take on Beloit in the other.
Andale wins tiebreaker to go through to 4A semifinals
Three Wichita-area teams were involved in tiebreakers that ultimately decided their fate on Friday.
Andale was the lone team on the right side, as the Indians (38-3) advanced to the Class 4A semifinals in Hutchinson to face Baldwin after finishing 2-1 in pool play on Friday.
Circle also finished 2-1 in the same pool, including a dramatic, three-set win over Andale (22-25, 31-29, 25-23) in the final match of the day. But because Andale and Bishop Miege won a higher percentage of their points, those two teams advanced with Circle left behind. The Thunderbirds also defeated McPherson, 14-25, 25-19, 26-24, while dropping their match against Miege.
In the other pool, Augusta suffered the same fate as Circle after going 2-1 on the day with wins over Labette County and Ottawa. But because it didn’t win a high-enough percentage of its points, Augusta finished third in the pool with Baldwin and Ottawa both advancing.
Garden Plain goes undefeated in pool play to advance to 2A semifinals
It was the perfect start to the Class 2A state tournament for Garden Plain, which finished 3-0 in pool play and secured the top seed in Saturday’s semifinals against Hillsboro.
The Owls (33-9) made short work of Jefferson County North, 25-17, 25-20, and Maranatha Academy, 25-19, 25-20, before taking down Ellinwood in three sets, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22.
Maize South, Bishop Carroll see seasons end at 5A state
Bishop Carroll and Maize South both saw the end of their seasons come on Friday in pool play at the Class 5A state tournament in Salina.
Both Wichita-area teams were stuck in the same pool as Lansing and St. James Academy, two championship favorites. Maize South and Carroll each dropped both matches to those powers, while Carroll came out on top of Maize South in a third-set thriller, 24-26, 25-219, 28-26, for the lone win of the day.
Carroll ended its season with a 26-14 record, while Maize South finished 30-11.
