Here are 10 Wichita area teams who highlighted the weekend’s performances.

1. Cheney comes out on top of loaded 3A regional

It was a match fitting of a state tournament, but top-10 teams from Cheney and Nickerson instead squared off in a Class 3A regional championship game.

Nickerson had the home-court advantage, but Cheney delivered one of its finest performances of the season to come away with a victory in straight sets, 25-18, 25-20.

After taking down one of the top threats to a state title in 29-win Nickerson, Cheney (37-2) earned the No. 2 seed at the state tournament in Hutchinson and will play Nemaha Central, Goodland and Heritage Christian in Friday’s pool play.

Another area team, Smoky Valley (37-3), also qualified for the state tournament and will be the No. 5 seed and play Eureka, Riverton and Beloit.

2. Dream season continues to state for Wichita Northwest

The best season in school history continues to march on, as the Grizzlies took care of business hosting their own regional to punch their ticket back to the Class 6A state tournament with the No. 2 seed and 39-1 record.

After easily dispatching Dodge City in the semifinals, Northwest overcame an early deficit in the first set of the championship match against Liberal and never looked back in a 25-21, 25-16 victory.

3. Bishop Carroll set to return to 5A quarters for fifth straight year

It was business as usual for Bishop Carroll, which secured its fifth straight regional championship with a straight-set victory over Valley Center in a pod hosted by Topeka West.

While it didn’t end in a state bid, Valley Center owned the top upset of the day for Class 5A regional tournaments after the 14th-seeded Hornets stunned the pod’s top seed, 27-win Topeka West, in a third-set thriller, 31-29, after splitting the first two sets.

The Mavericks (30-8) topped Salina South in straight sets in the semifinals, then faced an Andover Central team that forced a third set in the last meeting between the two teams. It was another tightly-contested match, but Maize South once again prevailed with a 25-17, 25-23 victory over the Jaguars.
