In celebration of the 100th state track meet May 28-29 at Cessna Stadium, high school track coaches, athletes and long-timer observers were asked for their lists of top 10 meet moments. It's part of a publication chronicling 100 years of the meet available at the meet and through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
The Eagle will present them each Sunday through the meet's conclusion. Past moments are available at VarsityKansas.com.
9. KC Washington's Wendell Gaskin sweeps the sprints
Gaskin won the 100 meters, 200 and 400 in Class 6A's 1991 meet. He ran the 100 meters in 10.59 seconds, 200 in 21.19 and his 400 time of 46.76 is still the state's best anytime, anywhere.
Amazingly, Gaskin was deaf. He turned his head toward the starter to watch the flash of the pistol before he took off.
''I tell you, nobody can stay with him, and for God's sake, he stumbles out of the blocks," his AAU coach, Al Hobson, said in '91. "It'll be a while before we see another one like him."
