Kansas high school girls soccer regional scores: Andover Central stuns Kapaun in OT
With 10 girls soccer teams entering the Class 5A West regional with winning records, Tuesday’s opening round of postseason play promised to deliver some exciting matchups.
The No. 8 vs. No. 9 matchup proved to be the most entertaining of them all, as Andover Central stunned Kapaun Mt. Carmel in overtime for a 1-0 victory at Stryker Complex.
After a full 80 minutes where the Crusaders enjoyed the majority of possession and the better of the attack, Andover Central ended the game with 3:22 remaining in the first overtime when Reese Fleming connected with Mary Metz in the box for a tap-in goal for the game-winner.
It was the eighth shutout of the season from the Jaguars’ defense, spearheaded by more superb play from goalkeeper Avery Mason.
Andover Central (11-6) advanced to Thursday’s regional championship game at top-seeded Goddard Eisenhower (15-1-1).
All four of the 5A regional championship games are intriguing matchups, as Goddard (11-6) heads to Maize South (14-1-2), Bishop Carroll (13-4) heads to Maize (14-3) and Andover (14-3) will host Hays (13-3).
In the Class 6A opening round, Derby topped Liberal 3-1, Wichita East beat Wichita North 3-1 and Wichita Northwest defeated Hutchinson 4-3 in penalty kicks after scoreless regulation and overtimes. Derby (at Manhattan), Northwest (at Dodge City) and East (at Washburn Rural) will all travel for Thursday’s regional title games.
In the Class 4-1A opening round, notable victories came in Wichita Collegiate’s 2-0 result over Thomas More Prep and Wichita Trinity’s 3-1 win over Wichita Classical.
For Thursday’s regional finals, Mulvane (13-3-1) will host Rose Hill (5-10-2), McPherson (13-3-1) will host Collegiate (4-8-1), Circle (11-5-1) will host Trinity (5-12) and Augusta (9-7) will host Buhler (8-7-1).
