From Haysville to CFL, Tyler Kahmann emerges as league’s top touchdown threat

Tyler Kahmann spent years rewriting record books in Kansas.

Now the Haysville native is making an immediate impact in professional football north of the border.

Through his first five games with the Toronto Argonauts, the Campus High School graduate leads the Canadian Football League with five touchdown catches, emerging as one of the league’s most productive scoring threats after spending 2025 trying to earn a place in the NFL.

Kahmann caught a 5-yard touchdown pass during the third quarter of the Toronto Argonauts’ 30-21 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this past Friday night, giving him five touchdown receptions through his first five games.

The 25-year-old has totaled 18 receptions for 253 yards while quickly establishing himself as one of Toronto’s most productive red-zone targets.

For Kahmann, the early breakthrough is the latest turn in a football journey defined by patience.

He spent six years building one of the most decorated careers in Emporia State history, went undrafted following college and received only a brief opportunity with Indianapolis before turning to the CFL.

Now the 6-foot-3, 206-pound receiver is doing in professional football what he spent years doing in Kansas: producing whenever the ball comes his way.

Kahmann announced his arrival in the CFL during his Toronto debut, catching six passes for 106 yards and his first professional touchdown against Montreal. He added another touchdown the following week against Ottawa, then delivered his biggest performance yet with five catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns in a victory over Saskatchewan.

Friday’s touchdown in Winnipeg gave Kahmann a score in four of Toronto’s first five games.

Although the Argonauts dropped to 2-3 with the loss, Kahmann’s emergence has become one of the bright spots during the team’s uneven start.

His success should not surprise anyone who followed his record-setting career at Emporia State.

Kahmann arrived at Emporia State in 2019 after a standout career at Campus, where he earned All-Metro recognition from The Eagle.

His college career began with a redshirt season, then was delayed further by the coronavirus pandemic. He did not play his first full season for the Hornets until 2021.

Kahmann was a productive receiver during his first two seasons on the field, but his career took off in 2023. He caught 101 passes for 1,234 yards and 20 touchdowns, becoming the only receiver at any level of NCAA football that season to finish with at least 100 receptions, 1,000 receiving yards and 20 touchdown catches.

Kahmann returned for one final season and became even more productive.

He finished 2024 with 100 receptions for a career-high 1,488 yards and another 20 touchdowns. He earned first-team All-American honors from several organizations and finished his career with virtually every major receiving record at Emporia State.

Kahmann totaled 281 receptions, 3,661 receiving yards and 54 touchdown catches, setting program records in all three categories. He also established the MIAA career record for touchdown receptions.

Still, record-breaking production at the Division II level did not guarantee a spot in the NFL.

Kahmann was not selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, but Indianapolis signed him as an undrafted free agent and gave him the summer to compete for a roster spot.

He appeared in all three preseason games for the Colts and finished with two catches for eight yards. Indianapolis released him during its final roster cuts, later brought him back briefly on the practice squad and released him again.

His first NFL opportunity had lasted only a few months.

His professional career, however, was not over.

Kahmann found another opportunity with Toronto and spent time learning a different version of football, one played on a wider field with three downs and more pre-snap motion.

The transition has not slowed him.

Through five games, more than one-quarter of Kahmann’s receptions have resulted in touchdowns and he is averaging more than 14 yards per catch.

Kahmann and the Argonauts return to action at 6:30 p.m. Central on Saturday, July 18 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Wichita fans can watch the game for free on CFL+, the league’s online streaming service.

Less than a year ago, Kahmann was searching for another opportunity after his NFL audition ended.

Five games into his CFL career, he is no longer simply trying to prove he belongs in professional football.

He is leading the league in touchdowns.
