For just the second time in 49 years, the Kansas Shrine Bowl ended in a tie on Saturday night.

The high school football all-star event, which was played at Pittsburg State, finished in a 10-10 tie when the West team drove the field and settled for a 29-yard field goal by Dodge City’s Emanuel Aguilar with 23 seconds remaining.

It was the first Shrine Bowl tie since a 12-12 tie between the West and East team in the 2001 game.

The only touchdown scored by the West team came in the first quarter following an interception and 22-yard return by Collegiate’s Ashtun Villagomez. The offense capitalized on the short field when Sedgwick quarterback Lance Hoffsommer, an Emporia State signee, scrambled and darted in from 10 yards out for a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.

That would be all of the scoring in the first half, as the West team entered halftime with just 50 yards of total offense. The West defense did finish with two interceptions, as Junction City’s Keghan McConnell also hauled in a pick in the first quarter.

The East team broke through in the third quarter following a bad snap on an attempted punt by the West team which ended in a safety. East then took its first lead of the game when Basehor-Linwood’s Zack Sisemore scampered in from seven yards out and Lawrence’s Truman Juelsgaard converted on a swinging gate play for the two-point conversion and 10-7 lead with 7:08 remaining.

East had a chance to salt the clock away, but its fourth-down attempt near midfield was thwarted by a superb, open-field tackle from Southeast-Saline linebacker Matt Rodriguez to give West the ball back with 2:20 remaining.

The West team gained momentum when it pulled off a double-reverse pass that saw Cheney quarterback Harrison Voth find Bishop Carroll receiver Matthew Holthusen for a 24-yard gain, the longest gain of the game for the team.

The West team was eight yards away from the winning score in the end zone with 35 seconds left, but failed to convert a third down and settled for the game-tying field goal by Aguilar, a Fort Hays State signee.

Shawnee Mission Northwest quarterback Blake Reeder was named the East MVP after completing 15 of 25 passes for 192 yards and adding 22 rushing yards. The West MVP was Cimarron defensive back Braxton Harrison, a Fort Hays State signee who finished with a team-high nine tackles and a pass breakup.

Maize South running back Evan Cantu finished with a team-high 53 rushing yards on 15 attempts for the West team, while Buhler’s Sam Elliott had 12 yards on seven carries and Hoffsommer threw for 31 yards on three completions with 15 rushing yards.
