1. Bishop Carroll survives again for 25th straight win over Kapaun Mount Carmel

It was a familiar scene at Cessna Stadium on Friday night: exhilaration for Bishop Carroll, heartbreak for Kapaun Mount Carmel.

And for the 25 straight game and 22nd straight year, Carroll came out on top in a 27-21 win over Kapaun. This time the stakes were even higher, as Carroll (No. 1) and Kapaun (No. 2) entered as the top-ranked teams in Class 5A with the winner earning at least a share of the City League championship.

For the second straight season, the Crusaders had the ball and were driving in the final minutes for what could have been the game-winning score. For the second straight season, a Kapaun turnover deep in Carroll territory led to devastation.

This year, Kapaun had a pass in the end zone that could have potentially won the game in the final minute. Instead, the pass was tipped by Reed Haneberg and intercepted by Michael Polley in the end zone for the game-sealing play.

It was the thrilling conclusion to a highly anticipated game that managed to live up to the hype.

The back-and-forth affair once again was locked in a tie early in the fourth quarter when Kapaun’s Omari Elias (172 rushing yards) scored his third rushing touchdown to bring the Crusaders level at 21.

But Carroll methodically reeled off what would become the game-winning drive, as quarterback Chase Smarsh (174 passing yards, 106 rushing yards) led his team down the field. The scoring drive was capped by a seven-yard touchdown run by Jadonn Williams with 2:40 remaining.

A potential disaster for Carroll happened on the extra-point try, as the snap was botched and Carroll was left clinging to a 27-21 lead with nearly three minutes still left for Kapaun.

But for the second straight year, Carroll’s defense came through in the closing minutes to deliver the victory and, this time, for a share of the City League title.

2. Maize knocks off Maize South once again in ranked rivalry game

Maize South entered with the undefeated record and higher ranking, but Maize showed once again why it has owned the rivalry game since it resumed in 2018.

In a battle between two ranked Class 5A teams, No. 8 Maize picked up its fifth straight win in the rivalry series with a 49-27 victory over No. 5 Maize South on Friday. All five wins have come in the last four seasons, as Maize has ended Maize South’s season in the 5A playoffs the last three seasons.

Maize (5-1) put Maize South (5-1) on its heels right from the start, as the Eagles delivered a dominant opening quarter with three unanswered touchdowns capped by Avery Johnson finding Justin Stephens for a 14-yard score and 21-0 lead to end the first quarter. Stephens finished with 125 receiving yards.

Maize running back Daeshaun Carter had his best game of the season, finishing with 182 rushing yards and three touchdowns — all coming in the first half when Maize built a 28-7 lead. When Johnson ripped off a 70-yard touchdown run to start the second half, Maize led 35-7 in what proved to be an insurmountable lead.

Maize South attempted a comeback, as Owen Bailey found Luke McCormack for a 12-yard touchdown and running back Evan Cantu scored twice to cut Maize’s lead to 42-27 with 51 seconds left in the third quarter. Cantu finished with 222 rushing yards on 38 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Mavericks.

But Johnson sealed the win for Maize with a touchdown response of his own, scoring from 34 yards out to go up 49-27 in the fourth quarter. Johnson finished the game with 139 rushing yards on just nine carries and three touchdowns, while also throwing for 133 yards and another score.

3. Buhler rallies to snap losing streak to McPherson in 4A ranked battle

Buhler snapped a six-game losing streak and picked up its first win over McPherson since 2016 when the No. 3-ranked Crusaders rallied for a 42-30 victory over the No. 4-ranked Bullpups in a top-five Class 4A battle.

McPherson had owned the rivalry as of recently and ended Buhler’s season in the playoffs in 2020 and 2017. The Bullpups looked well on their way again in the first quarter, as they returned a kickoff for a touchdown and added another touchdown from Aiden Hoover for a 17-7 lead.

But Buhler would recover, as Sam Elliott scored a rushing touchdown then Tanner Tustian scooped a fumble forced by Bo Van Bruggen and returned it for a touchdown and 21-17 lead. McPherson went into halftime with a 24-21 lead after Hunter Alvord found Jayden Dukes for a 67-yard touchdown.

The second half belonged to Buhler, however, as the Crusaders scored three unanswered touchdowns — back-to-back quarterback sneaks by Bradley Neill, then a 52-yard scamper by Elliott — to break open a 42-24 lead in the fourth quarter. By the time McPherson scored again, it was too late.

Since losing to No. 2 Andover Central in Week 2, Buhler (5-1) has won four in a row. Elliott led the way with 260 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while McPherson (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season and was led by Alvord with 185 passing yards.

4. Wichita East dominates ranked Garden City in breakout game

Since a 1-3 start to the season with all three losses to ranked Class 5A opponents, East announced its return to relevancy in a big way on Friday with a 50-7 shellacking of Class 6A No. 10-ranked Garden City at home.

Garden City entered on a four-game winning streak, including a win over Hays, which East lost to in the opening week of the season. But none of that seemed to matter in this matchup, as East picked up its first win over Garden City in the series history.

East took a 28-0 halftime lead, as quarterback Dae’Onte Mitchell and receiver Caquoy Patterson connected three times for touchdowns. Mitchell finished with 275 passing yards and 85 rushing yards with four total touchdowns.

East has scored at least 50 points in all three of its wins and will have one final chance to make an impression in the regular season with its finale against 5A No. 1-ranked Bishop Carroll on Oct. 22.

5. Salina Central stuns 4A No. 2 Andover Central with loss

The undefeated season of Class 4A No. 2-ranked Andover Central came to a stunning end on Friday with a 21-14 loss at unranked Salina Central.

The Mustangs had yet to beat a team with a winning record this season, but won their third game in a row to improve to 4-2 this season after out-gaining Andover Central 370-245 in total offensive yards.

Salina Central quarterback Parker Kavanagh finished with 213 passing yards and 145 rushing yards and scored all three touchdowns, including a three-yard keeper for what would become the game-winning score with 6:42 remaining in the game.

Andover Central’s typical dominant rushing attack was limited to less than 70 yards, while quarterback Kai Kunz still threw for 177 yards and receiver Cooper Tabor finished with five catches for 91 yards and a touchdown.

But Salina Central was in control for most of the game, opening the game with a score to lead 7-0 after the first quarter and then scoring right before halftime to take a 14-7 lead.

Kunz tied the game, 14-14, with a quarterback sneak with 10:05 left in the game, but Kavanagh answered with a touchdown run of his own on the next drive. The Jaguars’ final drive ended at the Salina Central 40-yard line with a turnover on downs.

6. Field goal the difference in 2A showdown between Kingman-Garden Plain

In a crucial Class 2A, District 6 game, No. 6-ranked Kingman came out on top 10-7 over No. 8-ranked Garden Plain.

It was a defensive battle, as each team traded touchdowns with the tiebreaker coming on a 23-yard field goal kicked by Kingman’s Nolan Freund midway through the fourth quarter.

Garden Plain had three drives in the final seven minutes of the game to potentially tie, but never crossed Kingman’s 39-yard line and turned the ball over on downs all three times.

Freund led Kingman with 204 passing yards and a rushing touchdown with Avrey Albright (80 receiving yards), Carter Helm (80) and Geoff Holloway (70) being the main targets through the air.

Garden Plain senior running back Reed Adelhardt once again delivered a big game, rushing 31 times for 159 yards and even throwing for a touchdown — a 40-yard strike to Teagen Daerr for a 7-0 lead right before halftime.

But because Garden Plain has now lost in back-to-back weeks to Chaparral and Kingman, the Owls are in danger of missing the 2A playoffs despite a top-10 ranking. Garden Plain would need Kingman to lose at Bluestem and then in its finale against Chaparral and also make up a 47-point differential in the process.

7. Collegiate’s passing game sparks district win over Clearwater

Collegiate has proved during its unbeaten run this season that it is most dangerous running the ball.

But the No. 2-ranked Spartans showed they can be just as potent through the air in a 45-14 win over Clearwater to improve to 6-0 this season and a perfect 3-0 in Class 3A, District 7 play.

Junior quarterback Wes Fair completed 10 of 14 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. His favorite target on the night was Ashtun Villagomez, who caught four passes for 89 yards and a touchdown and added another score rushing.

Collegiate leaned on its rushing attack to build a 24-7 halftime lead, as Fair, Conner Gagnon and Jaden Mitchell all added touchdowns on the ground. When Clearwater loaded the box in the second half, that’s when Fair went to the air — throwing a 35-yard touchdown to Villagomez and a 16-yard score to Jack Duarte, who also kicked a 49-yard field goal.

8. Mulvane extends winning streak to four games with rivalry shutout

It was a tough start to the season for Mulvane, which had to play the top two-ranked teams in Class 3A in No. 2 Collegiate and No. 1 Andale. The Wildcats hung tough, giving both opponents their best game so far this season — but ultimately fell to 0-2.

Since then, Mulvane has ripped off four straight wins to ascend to No. 9 in the Class 4A rankings capped by a dominant 33-0 shutout victory over rival Rose Hill on Friday.

Mulvane continues to get the job done with big games from seniors Mason Ellis and Hunter Seier. Ellis, a quarterback, threw for 179 yards and rushed for 100 more with a total of four touchdowns, while Seier hauled in eight catches for 131 yards and Ellis’ lone throwing touchdown.

Meanwhile, Mulvane’s defense registered a dominant performance led by Ian Comer, Trent Moses, Josh Phillips, Trenton Davis and Kaiden Abasolo. The Wildcats even started the game with a defensive score with a fumble return for a touchdown.

Mulvane (4-2) will have yet another ranked opponent next Friday when it travels to 4A No. 4-ranked McPherson.

9. Eisenhower’s Cade Friend goes off in win over Ark City

Eisenhower has been flying under the radar in Class 5A but with a 3-3 record, two straight wins and sneaky-good wins at Salina Central and now at Arkansas City, the Tigers are building momentum at the right time.

Eisenhower picked up its latest impressive win with a 33-14 road win over Ark City, which played in the Class 4A state championship game last season.

It was another huge game from Eisenhower receiver Cade Friend, who tallied 11 catches for 212 receiving yards and three touchdowns in the win. Lucas Dickman led Eisenhower with 113 rushing yards and a score, while junior Tyner Horn threw for 250 yards and connected with Friend three times in the first half to put Eisenhower up 27-0.

Eisenhower has a great chance to keep the momentum going, as it will be favored in its final two games of the season at home against Great Bend (0-6) and Valley Center (2-4).

10. Andale scores school-record 96 points

Andale scored a touchdown in the first minute, which was a sign of things to come in what became a 96-6 victory over Trinity Academy.

In total, Andale broke its school-record for scoring with 13 touchdowns, which included four non-offensive scores (three interceptions returned and a punt) and three more coming after halftime with the backups in. Andale led 74-6 at halftime.

Andale ran just 40 plays on offense and piled up 362 rushing yards, as Riley Marx (75 yards, two touchdowns), Gage Prosser (72 yards, two touchdowns) and Owen Eck (57 yards, two touchdowns) all had multiple-score games.

The No. 1-ranked Indians (6-0) continued to roll through their Class 3A competition, improving to 3-0 in District 7 play. Andale finishes the season with its two toughest opponents: at Clearwater this Friday, then closing the regular season at home against No. 2-ranked and fellow unbeaten Wichita Collegiate.
