Wichita area sees first canceled high school football game due to COVID-19
It was predicted, and now it has come to pass.
The Wichita area has seen its first canceled high school football game because of a positive COVID-19 test. Buhler was set to host Andover Central Friday night, but Andover Central confirmed the positive case of one of its players Friday afternoon.
Both schools’ administrators reached a joint decision to call off the game.
“The safety of our players is our top priority,” according to a tweet from Andover Central. “We believe canceling tonight’s game is the surest way for our players to remain healthy and have the opportunity to play in the future.”
Ahead of this fall 2020 season in Kansas, Bill Faflick, Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) executive director, said during an executive board meeting he anticipated not every football program would play a full schedule.
Andover Central beat Buhler 31-14 in last year‘s Class 4A state quarterfinals. Friday’s rematch was eagerly awaited.
