Valley Center announces next football coach

Valley Center has promoted offensive coordinator Scott L’Ecuyer to become the Hornets’ next football coach.

L’Ecuyer replaces athletic director Caleb Smith, who stepped down as coach after the 2017 season to spend more time with his family. L’Ecuyer was the Hornets’ offensive coordinator for two seasons.

L’Ecuyer was born in Valley Center and played linebacker for the Hornets. Smith said familiarity was a big factor among the selection committee.

“He understands Valley Center better than anybody,” Smith said. “He wants to get kids involved. He wants to get the community involved.”

Smith said the offense will run more spread packages in 2018, but other than an extra receiver or two on the field, the DNA will remain.

“He’s going to do some of the similar things that I did off the field,” Smith said. “The verbage will stay the same, and that’s huge for the players.”

L’Ecuyer’s promotion is pending school board approval.
