Wichita high school basketball scores: Moundridge-Berean boys rematch set in 2A

The Moundridge boys basketball team handled its business on Wednesday with a 60-35 home victory over Republic County in a Class 2A sub-state semifinal, sending the Wildcats into a championship showdown that feels like it should be happening next week.

The third-seeded Wildcats (21-3) will travel to second-seeded Berean (21-2) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday with a trip to the state tournament on the line.

On paper, it’s a sub-state final.

In reality, it’s a heavyweight bout between two of the best teams in 2A with one of them heading home for good at the end of the night.

Moundridge got there behind a huge night from Jesse Lutz, who poured in 29 points on Wednesday, while fellow senior Layton Schmidt added 16 in the win over Republic County. The Wildcats controlled the game from start to finish and now carry an eight-game winning streak into Saturday’s rematch.

The opponent is one Moundridge knows well.

Berean beat the Wildcats 64-40 on its home floor during the regular season in a Heart of America League matchup, one of only three losses Moundridge has suffered all season. Since that game on Feb. 3, the Wildcats haven’t lost.

Berean enters with plenty of momentum of its own, bringing a seven-game winning streak after a 55-43 win over Conway Springs on Wednesday.

In the final 2A boys rankings, five of the top six teams came from the Heart of America: Sterling (No. 1), Berean (No. 2), Moundridge (No. 3), Classical (No. 5) and Ell-Saline (No. 6). All five teams are still alive and playing in Saturday’s sub-state finals.

That makes this rematch especially compelling, as two of the best teams in 2A will meet with everything on the line.

Here are scores from around the Wichita area from games played on Wednesday, March 4, as well as Saturday’s sub-state final schedules in Kansas high school basketball brackets.
