Wichita high school basketball scores: Andover, Kapaun girls score big wins
In a rivalry that rarely disappoints, the Kapaun Mt. Carmel and Bishop Carroll girls basketball teams delivered another instant classic Tuesday night.
This time it was the Crusaders walking off the floor with a 47-45 road win that helped improve their standing in a jumbled Class 5A West regional race. The win gives Kapaun (14-5, 9-3 City League) its second straight key league victory after beating East last Friday, while Carroll (11-6, 7-4) lost the rematch after winning 47-44 over its rival back in December.
After Carroll grabbed a 45-44 lead on a clutch 3 by Avery McCorry with just over a minute remaining, Kapaun turned to its star, Zoey Buckner-Franklin, and she delivered. She drove toward the basket, pulled up for a jumper and drew contact. She calmly sank both free throws with 20.3 seconds left to put Kapaun back in front.
Out of a timeout, Carroll tried to find a cutter to the basket but Kapaun’s Lizzy Dulac was there for a steal. Buckner-Franklin was fouled again and split two free throws with 5.3 seconds left, stretching the lead to 47-45. Carroll still had one last chance, but McCorry’s running halfcourt heave at the buzzer hit the backboard and rim before bouncing off.
It was a thrilling finish to a rivalry game that featured eight lead changes in the fourth quarter alone.
Brooke Steven put Carroll ahead early with a jumper, only to see Dulac answer with a game-tying 3. Buckner-Franklin followed with a go-ahead bucket, only for McCorry to answer back with a layup to nudge Carroll back in front at 39-38. Buckner-Franklin then drilled a transition 3 for the lead, but Steven answered again for Carroll with a transition 3 of her own for a 42-41 Carroll lead with 1:48 to go.
The most spectacular play of the night came moments later. Buckner-Franklin drove baseline into traffic and jumped with seemingly nowhere to go with the ball after attracting a crowd, only to somehow fire a cross-court pass to Ellie Knipp on the opposite wing. Knipp buried the triple to give Kapaun a 44-42 edge and set up the thrilling finish.
Andover girls basketball picks up win as new No. 1 in Class 5A
The target was clear in Andover’s first game as the new No. 1-ranked girls basketball team in Class 5A and the Trojans played like a team ready for it.
Andover delivered a statement performance Tuesday, going on the road and knocking off No. 4-ranked Maize South, 54-40, to improve to 16-1 this season and snap the Mavericks’ 15-game winning streak. It also marked the first loss for Maize South (16-3) to a Kansas opponent this season.
Star guard Bella Bouddhara set the tone for Andover with a game-high 16 points, including a pair of momentum-swinging 3s to open the second half, while Aliyah Singhateh led Maize South with 12 points.
The Trojans gained control with a defensive clampdown late in the first half, as they held Maize South without a field goal for the final six minutes of the second quarter, turning stops into an 11-2 closing run to open up a 22-15 halftime lead.
The surge started with a corner 3 from freshman Alysha Pierce, while Brynn Eilert followed with a putback and Bella Davis slipped a pass inside to Bouddhara for a back-door score to stretch the margin heading into the break.
Any thought of a Maize South comeback disappeared quickly in the third quarter.
Bouddhara came out firing and drilled two straight 3s, then Pierce added another from beyond the arc to balloon the lead to 31-17 and force a Maize South timeout. Andover kept attacking out of the stoppage, as Grier Hand scored on a floater and Katie Robert knocked down a long jumper to cap a dominant stretch and extend the advantage to 38-19.
From there, the Trojans never allowed the Mavericks to cut the deficit back into single digits.
