Kansas high school basketball state results: Maize boys capture third place in 6A

A little more than two months ago, the Maize boys basketball team was outclassed by Wichita Heights in a 17-point loss.

How much difference two months can make.

When the two teams squared off again in the third-place game at the Class 6A state tournament at Koch Arena on Saturday afternoon, Maize showed off its improvement in a 57-52 win over the Falcons.

It capped one of the most impressive midseason turnarounds, as the eighth-seeded Eagles (18-7) won 11 of their final 13 games, including a No. 1 seed upset of Shawnee Mission South in the opening round of the state tournament.

Heights (21-4) held a close lead for the majority of the game, but Maize finally spurted ahead on a steal and bucket by Alec Grill to put the Eagles up 50-49 with 3:39 remaining.

After the Falcons tied the score on a free throw, Maize took the lead for good on an alley-oop pass from Brayden Myovela and dunk by Alan Hanna, who scored a game-high 24 points, for a 52-50 lead with 2:43 to play. Charles Sharp added another score on a backcut, then Heights star Chase Robinson scored to trim the deficit to 54-52 with 24.6 seconds left.

Hanna split a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left, which gave Heights a final look at a potential game-tying 3. But the shot missed, Maize rebounded and threw ahead to Hanna, who ended the game with an emphatic slam dunk.

It was the final game on the sidelines of legendary Heights coach Joe Auer, who announced his retirement earlier in the season. He led the Falcons to six state championships and finished his career as the all-time wins leader in the City League.
