Kansas high school basketball scores: Bishop Carroll boys take down top-ranked Kapaun
It was a familiar setting on Tuesday night, as Steve Eck and Dale Faber paced the sidelines and squared off against each other in a thrilling City League boys basketball game.
No, this wasn’t 1995. This was 2024.
After taking separate 25-year breaks from coaching in the high school ranks, Eck and Faber are both back coaching in the City League, and their first meeting didn’t disappoint. The Holy War added yet another riveting chapter on Tuesday in a 56-52 win by Faber’s Bishop Carroll team over Eck’s Kapaun Mt. Carmel squad that was undefeated and ranked No. 1 in Class 5A as defending state champions.
It wasn’t long ago when Carroll was contending for state titles, but after three straight losing seasons, Tuesday’s win felt like a statement win under Faber. Carroll students celebrated the momentous victory by rushing the floor after the final buzzer.
Faber is back at Carroll, where he coached from 1987-99, after retiring from a standout 18-year career as head coach at Friends University in 2021. It’s a path similar to the one that brought Eck back, as he coached at South from 1986-96, left to coach in college and retired from a successful career at Hutchinson Community College to take the Kapaun job in 2021.
As for Tuesday’s game, Kapaun (3-1) looked every bit like the defending champions in the first quarter when Corbin Johnson was spectacular to lead the Crusaders to a 17-9 lead. The star senior finished with a team-high 18 points.
But Carroll (2-1) steadily chipped away at the lead behind the play of Ian Muth (19 points) and Brody Kreutzer (15 points). A free-throw line jumper by Muth put Carroll in front 30-29 early in the third quarter and a late-clock 3 by Kreutzer put the Golden Eagles up 42-35.
Kapaun managed to claw back to within 50-47 in the final three minutes of the game and even had two great looks at potential game-tying 3s. But both shots missed; Carroll added to its lead on a Kreutzer fadeaway jumper. A corner 3 by Owen Herlocker trimmed the deficit to 52-50 with 1:22 left, but Muth was fouled and made both free throws to extend the lead and Kapaun never came within a single possession again.
The Crusaders’ comeback bid was not helped by 4-of-9 shooting at the foul line in the fourth quarter.
