After nearly two decades of working as an assistant coach, Wichita native Adrian Griffin is nearing terms to become a first-time head coach in the NBA.

According to a Saturday afternoon report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Griffin is finalizing a contract to become the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Griffin has spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors with previous stops as an assistant with the Bucks (2008-10), Chicago Bulls (2010-15), Orlando Magic (2015-16) and Oklahoma City Thunder (2016-18).

Not only would Griffin set to become a first-time head coach, he would take over a roster expected to immediately compete for an NBA championship with superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who previously won a world title in 2021.

Griffin, a two-time all-state high school basketball player at Wichita East who led the Blue Aces to a Class 6A state championship in 1992, was a recent inductee in the 2023 class to the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame. He would be the first Wichita native to be a head coach in the NBA.
