McPherson’s Taylor Robertson breaks NCAA women’s basketball career 3-point record at OU
The shooting stroke of McPherson native Taylor Robertson has etched her name in the college basketball history books and earned the admiration of the NBA’s all-time leading 3-point shooter Steph Curry.
Robertson broke the NCAA Div. I women’s basketball career record for 3-pointers with her first shot in Saturday’s game against Iowa State, as it marked the 498th career triple for the Oklahoma star, passing the previous record set by Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell from 2014-18.
Although Robertson is a fifth-year senior at OU, she broke the record of Mitchell, the No. 2 pick in the 2018 WNBA draft, in one fewer career game. In 138 career games, Robertson is averaging 3.6 threes per game on 44% accuracy.
The record caught the attention of Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, who sent Robertson a video message to congratulate her on Sunday.
“Now I know you’re gonna keep adding to that number and probably make it hopefully something that will never be broken,” Curry said in the message. “But to go from making eight threes in your first college game against Western Kentucky to now 498, that is an amazing, amazing accomplishment. I only made 414 threes in college, so you’ve been had me beat. But this is an amazing accomplishment for you. And not only doing 498, but shooting 44% in your career while accomplishing that level of volume, that is unbelievable..
“And I just want to say congratulations. Be proud of yourself. I know you and your team are primed for an amazing tournament run, so finish the season strong. Congratulations on this record. You earned it.”
Robertson, the 2017 Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year who led McPherson to a Class 4A state championship in 2018, has long been considered one of the best sharpshooters to ever come out of the Kansas high school basketball ranks. This accomplishment gives her a strong argument to be the greatest shooter.
Robertson has had a storied career at OU, where she has blossomed into a unanimous All-Big 12 first-team player and an honorable mention All-American. She is the Big 12 and OU career 3-point leader and the NCAA’s active leader in free throw percentage at 92%.
And Robertson still has plenty of games to tack onto her record. OU has nine games remaining in Big 12 play, then the Big 12 postseason tournament and likely an NCAA Tournament run.
