The 10 winners to know from Friday’s Kansas high school basketball tournament games
As the Kansas high school basketball midseason tournaments continued on Friday, Varsity Kansas compiled the 10 wins to know from Wichita-area boys and girls basketball teams in action.
A full schedule of Saturday’s championship games and other placement games for tournaments all around the state can be found below.
1. Maize South tops Derby to set up Dodge City title game vs. Hutchinson
The three best AV-CTL Div. I teams headed out to Dodge City with a crash course between Hutchinson, Maize South and Dodge City destined in the Tournament of Champions.
Maize South, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, managed to play well enough to top Derby 73-63 in Friday’s semifinal, its second win over the Class 6A No. 4-ranked Panthers (9-2), and now the Mavericks will face off against Hutchinson in Saturday’s 5 p.m. championship game at United Wireless Arena.
The Salthawks (10-0) maintained their perfect season under coach Bryan Miller with yet another romp, this one a 56-29 victory over Junction City in the first semifinal. Hutchinson, ranked No. 3 in 5A, handed Maize South (9-1) its only loss of the season in a 64-55 win on Jan. 6 and will be looking for its first TOC championship since 1986.
In Maize South’s win over Derby, Isaiah Atwater scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half and Michael Kates (17 points) and Troy Homan (16 points) also scored in double-figures. Derby was led by 14 points from sophomore Jack Ulwelling, while senior Kaeson Fisher-Brown chipped in 12 points.
Derby will play Junction City in the third-place game on Saturday, while Bishop Carroll, which picked up a 58-34 win over host Dodge City on Friday, will face Shawnee Mission South in the fifth-place game. Newton, which lost 53-39 to SM South on Friday, will play Dodge City in the seventh-place game.
2. Collegiate’s unbeaten season ends, while Kapaun advances in El Dorado
Great Bend played the spoiler to deny what would have been a tantalizing all-Wichita final in the Bluestem Classic, handing Collegiate its first loss of the season in a 61-55 victory in Friday’s semifinal in El Dorado.
The Spartans shot poorly from the field and fell behind by 14 points midway through the third quarter, but they nearly managed an improbable comeback.
Freshman Jaden Parker, who scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half, made four straight free throws to trim Great Bend’s lead to 57-55 with 1:01 remaining. Moments later, Collegiate’s defense forced a five-second call on the ensuing inbounds to have a chance to potentially tie or take the lead.
Collegiate missed a jumper, then multiple game-tying shots in the paint bounced off the rim and Great Bend cracked the pressure to score in transition to seal the victory.
Instead of an unbeaten Collegiate team, which entered ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, taking on City League heavyweight Kapaun Mt. Carmel, 10-1 and ranked second in 5A, in Saturday’s 4:15 p.m. championship game, it will be Great Bend (6-5).
The Crusaders registered their second straight blowout win on Friday to advance to the finals after a 79-57 win over Arkansas City. Will Anciaux, a 6-foot-6 senior center who is signed to play tight end on the Kansas State football team, scored a game-high 26 points for Kapaun, while Corbin Johnson added 16 points. Ark City was led by Trevor Pierce’s 23 points.
In Saturday’s placement games, Collegiate will face Ark City for third, Trinity Academy will face Manhattan CHIEF for fifth and El Dorado and Goddard will face off for seventh. Trinity topped El Dorado 64-43 and Manhattan CHIEF defeated Goddard 64-56 in Friday’s consolation action.
3. Wichita Heights faces undefeated team in January Jam championship game
Two heavyweights in Class 6A will square off in Valley Center’s January Jam championship at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, as defending state champion Wichita Heights (10-1) will take on undefeated and No. 7-ranked Garden City (12-0).
The Falcons, currently ranked No. 3 in 6A, didn’t face much resistance in Friday’s semifinal, as they easily dispatched Blue Valley in a 70-38 victory.
Marcus Zeigler led the way with 14 points, five assists and five steals, while junior star T.J. Williams added 14 points and eight rebounds and Amalachi Wilkins chipped in 17 points.
Garden City maintained its perfect season with a double-digit win of its own on Friday, cruising past Wichita Northwest in a 58-41 victory.
In the consolation bracket, Topeka Seaman topped Maize 61-53 and Sunrise Christian beat Valley Center 65-43.
Saturday’s medal games feature Wichita Northwest vs. Blue Valley for third place, while Seaman plays Sunrise for fifth and Maize takes on Valley Center for seventh.
4. Andover boys and girls both to play for Salina tournament title
Just like they did less than two weeks ago, the Andover boys easily handled Salina Central in an AV-CTL showdown in the semifinals of the Salina Invitational Tournament on Friday.
Indiana State commit Eli Shetlar scored a game-high 19 points, while Chris Harris added 18 points and Brad Harris chipped in 10 points in Andover’s 60-33 rout.
The Trojans, ranked No. 9 in 5A, improved to 8-2 with the victory and will face Blue Valley Southwest, 77-67 winners over Abilene, in Saturday’s 3:45 p.m. championship game.
The Andover girls basketball team was also able to cruise to Saturday’s title game in Salina, as the Trojans picked up a 43-29 win over Salina South on Friday.
It will be a ranked showdown in Saturday’s 2 p.m. final between 10-1 Andover, ranked No. 6 in 5A and 9-1 Liberal, ranked No. 6 in 6A. Liberal topped Salina Central 55-46 in Friday’s other semifinal.
5. Andale shuts down Rose Hill to advance to Halstead championship
With the score tied entering the final quarter and a spot in the Adolph Rupp Invitational championship on the line, Andale clamped down Rose Hill and escaped with a 50-39 victory in Friday’s semifinals in Halstead.
Andale was firmly in control after opening the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run to break free from a 33-33 tie. Andale senior Wyatt Spexarth scored 11 of his game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter to lead his team to Saturday’s 7:45 p.m. title game against Haven, which won 45-37 over Concordia in Friday’s other semifinal.
Rose Hill was led by 13 points from Kellan Simoneau, while Jace Evans added 10 points. The Rockets will face Concordia in Saturday’s third-place game.
The other placement games on Saturday will feature Cheney taking on Winfield for fifth and Garden Plain playing Halstead for seventh.
6. Andover Central to play for Ralph Miller title in Chanute
Andover Central ramped up its defense to hold Emporia to just 13 second-half points in a 41-35 victory in the semifinals of the Ralph Miller Classic in Chanute on Friday.
The Jaguars, 9-2 and ranked No. 8 in 5A, won their eighth straight game of the season to advance to Saturday’s 4:15 p.m. championship game against Bishop Miege, 8-2 and ranked No. 2 in 4A, following the Stags’ 68-63 win over Parkview (Mo.) on Friday.
7. Hesston boys and girls both advance to Hillsboro tournament championship
The top two seeds on the boys side advanced to the finals of the Trojan Classic in Hillsboro, as Hesston and Remington both registered two straight blowout wins to set up a meeting in Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. title game.
Jake Proctor and Micah Dahlsten scored 31 combined points to lead Hesston to a 48-33 win over Central Kansas League rival Hillsboro. The Swathers, ranked third in 3A, improved to 10-1 with the win.
Meanwhile, Remington had four double-digit scorers in Sage Martin (13), Sam Scheffler (10), Dylan Margreiter (10) and Kole Klaassen (10) in a 59-41 win over Clay Center on Friday. The Broncos, ranked No. 9 in 2A, improved to 10-2 on the season.
In the girls tournament, Hesston advanced to the Trojan Classic championship game with a 40-39 win over Eureka in Friday’s semifinals. Kendal Brueggen scored 19 points and added five steals for the Swathers (8-3), while Eureka was led by a game-high 20 points from Ashley Singhateh. Eureka, ranked No. 8 in 3A, had two potential go-ahead shots in the final minute, but missed both.
Hesston will meet Holcomb, 49-46 winners over Hillsboro on Friday, in Saturday’s 5:45 p.m. girls championship game, while Hillsboro and Eureka will square off for third place.
8. Ranked showdown between Circle, Wellington set for Chaparral tournament title
A showdown of two of the top teams in Class 4A is locked in for the Roadrunner Classic championship game after No. 4-ranked Circle (10-1) and No. 7-ranked Wellington (10-2) both prevailed in Friday’s semifinals.
Circle managed to hold off a late charge by Mulvane in a 48-45 win, while Wellington cruised to a 60-24 victory over the Reno County home school team in the other semifinal. The two AV-CTL teams will face off in Saturday’s 4 p.m. title game in Chaparral.
Circle and Wellington are scheduled to face off again in less than two weeks with a game slated on Wellington’s home court on Friday, Feb. 3.
9. Augusta pulls away late to advance to Baldwin title game
In a round-robin showdown against Wellsville, Augusta pulled away in the fourth quarter of a 63-57 victory on Friday.
Gavin Kiser scored a team-high 16 points to lead Augusta, while Kaden McDaniel added 12 points and Marcus McLanahan and Logan Ruddle each chipped in nine points for the Orioles, which led 46-45 entering the fourth quarter.
After winning both of its pool play games, Augusta (6-4) is on a three-game winning streak and will face Girard in the Baldwin Invitational Tournament championship at 4 p.m. Saturday.
10. Moundridge wins third straight Canton-Galva Invitational title
Behind 20 points apiece from Landon Kaufman and Barrett Moddelmog, Moundridge cruised to a 66-55 win over Ell-Saline in the championship game of the Canton-Galva Invitational on Friday.
Moundridge, ranked No. 10 in 2A, improved to 9-3 on the season and won its third straight tournament title in Canton-Galva.
