Wichita high school basketball prospect Andrell Burton scores 40 points in Campus win
Andrell Burton Jr. is an unselfish basketball player by nature, a trait that Campus boys basketball coach Chris Davis loves … most of the time.
For Burton’s junior season, his coach has been pleading with him to be more selfish and more aggressive with the basketball. After Tuesday, it’s obvious why.
With Burton engaged in attack mode from the jump, the 6-foot-6 junior exploded for a career-high 40 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and three blocks in a 74-46 win for Campus over Newton.
“I’m a team player,” Burton said. “I know I can showcase my talent, but I mainly try to get everybody involved because that’s the way basketball is played. I like playing team basketball.”
After double-digit losses to Andover and Andover Central to start the season where Burton only attempted 12 shots, Davis made it a point to encourage his star player to try to double that number against Newton. He did just that.
“Andrell is unselfish to a fault,” Davis said. “I’ve been waiting for him to exert himself a little bit more for us and he certainly exerted himself tonight. I thought he made his teammates better and still imposed himself on the game. Our guys feed off of him.”
Instead of settling for outside jumpers, Burton made sure to capitalize on his mobility and size advantage by attacking the rim early and often.
That kind of versatility is why 247Sports has Burton on the brink of their top-150 rankings for the class of 2024.
“He’s an inside-outside threat,” Davis. “You’ve got to extend yourself and guard him past the three-point line and then he can go inside and from five or six feet from the basket, he’s just lethal. He has such a quick first step and first jump. He’s 6-6 and his wingspan is unbelievable. He can play both ends of the floor and when he stays out of foul trouble, he gets to play even more. His upside is just through the roof.”
Burton is no stranger to high-level basketball. He plays competitive club basketball during the summer and he started for the Colts in the Class 6A state championship game as a freshman.
With Campus still building its program back to make another run at the state tournament, Burton hopes to lead the Colts there with his more aggressive play following Tuesday’s success.
“All of my coaches have told me to be more aggressive in the last couple of practices,” Burton said. “I’m going to try to be more aggressive scoring-wise. I’m pretty sure I set the tempo for us (on Tuesday) and got us going and got everybody in a groove. From there, it was all up.”
