Defense is what the Wichita Heights boys basketball program has always prided itself on and defense is what makes the Falcons a Class 6A state championship contender.

Heights once again produced the defensive stops it needed to prevail on Tuesday in a crucial City League battle between two ranked 6A teams, as the No. 3-ranked Falcons topped No. 8-ranked Wichita Northwest in a 58-52 victory at home.

The Falcons, who allow just 39 points per game, improved to 12-2 overall, boosted by a mid-season championship at the prestigious Dodge City tournament, and 9-2 in City League play, two games behind leader Kapaun Mt. Carmel, the top-ranked 5A squad and only team to beat Heights (by a combined five points) this season.

Marcus Zeigler scored a team-high 19 points, while Dre Kemp added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, Chase Harris chipped in with 11 points, four assists and four steals and star sophomore T.J. Williams scored 13 points to go along with six rebounds and four blocks. Northwest (9-4) was led by Kee’on Hutton, who scored a game-high 20 points, while Kevin Brown had 16 and Tasean Williams scored 10.
