Kansas native Taylor Robertson breaks Big 12 record for career three-pointers at OU
Taylor Robertson was one of the greatest sharpshooters Kansas high school basketball has ever seen.
Now the McPherson native has cemented her legend in Big 12 history, as the Oklahoma senior guard broke the Big 12 women’s basketball record for career three-pointers during the No. 23-ranked Sooners’ 83-77 win over No. 14-ranked Baylor on Wednesday night.
Robertson made all five of her three-pointers in the game, giving her 393 career triples — one more than Kansas State’s Laurie Koehn, another Kansas native, who held the conference record since finishing her career in 2005 with 292 career makes beyond the arc.
It was an emotional night for Robertson, who gives credit for the one of the sweetest jump shots to ever come out of Kansas to her father, Dave, who died in 2017 of colon cancer. It was hard not to think of the countless hours shooting with her father, honing a jump shot that would some day shatter records.
“I wish he could be here, but it’s really cool to have that,” Robertson told local media. “I know he would be proud because he started it. When I was younger, we would go and shoot for hours every day. A lot of it is credit to him.”
Robertson’s 15 points on 100% shooting were crucial to OU’s first win over Baylor since 2015.
She also moved into 10th place all-time in Division I history for most career three-point makes. If she’s able to play in OU’s final 14 regular-season games, Robertson is on pace to move into the top-five at her current pace of 4.4 threes per game.
“I think it’s really special the way she can share these moments with her dad,” OU coach Jennie Baranczyk said. “I think her dad had a hand in this one today. It’s hours of work. It’s belief in her team. And it was probably a little help from above.”
