Former Maize basketball star Caleb Grill heading to UNLV after Iowa State transfer
Caleb Grill’s college hoops journey has come to stop No. 3.
Out of Maize High School, Grill pledged to play college basketball at the Division I level at South Dakota State under coach T.J. Otzelberger. He flipped to Iowa State, but after just one season in Ames, he entered the transfer portal. He has rejoined Otzelberger at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, he announced via Twitter Sunday.
Otzelberger took the job at UNLV just days after Grill signed his letter of intent to play at SDSU. He worked with the NCAA to get out of his NLI and became one of the top prospects in the country.
UNLV remained a finalist for Grill even after he decided not to stay with SDSU. Kansas State and ISU rounded out his top three.
At ISU, Grill worked his way into the starting lineup. With the Cyclones suffering several injuries, he became one of the only freshmen to start in the Big 12 this season. He finished his ISU career averaging 1.9 points and 1.4 rebounds in 12.9 minutes.
He scored a career-high nine points in 39 minutes, also a career-high, March 11 against Oklahoma State. He played the final six and a half games of the season with a broken wrist and two ligament sprains, his mother said on Twitter.
Grill was a two-time All-Metro selection for The Eagle. He was a Top 11 pick in football and state champion in the high jump.
As a senior, he led Maize to an undefeated boys basketball regular season as the Eagles reached the Class 5A semifinals for the first time. They finished 24-1.
