Kansas high school baseball state scores: Derby, Carroll both advance with pitching gems
Bishop Carroll junior Shane Holman pitched a complete-game shutout to spur the Golden Eagles to a 6-0 win over Great Bend in the opening round of the Class 5A state tournament at Wichita State’s Eck Stadium on Thursday.
Holman was faced with a bases-loaded situation and no outs, protecting a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, and struck out three straight hitters to escape the jam and swing momentum back in Carroll’s direction.
It was the highlight of the outing for Holman, who threw seven scoreless innings, scattering six hits, walking one and striking out eight batters.
“That’s why we chose Shane to throw (the first game),” Carroll coach Charlie Ebright said. “He’s been pounding the zone all year. I think he only has two walks in 30-plus innings. We knew he could pound the zone, pitch to contact and let the defense work. He set a real good tone for us.”
Carroll, the top seed in the bracket, improved to 22-1 this season and will face Goddard Eisenhower, which defeated Topeka Seaman 7-0, in Friday’s 1:15 p.m. semifinal.
After escaping the bases-loaded jam, Holman had a relatively stress-free outing. He sat Great Bend down in order the next two innings and stranded the Panthers (13-10) with the bases loaded to finish the game and finish his complete game.
“It meant a lot to me to win for my team,” Holman said. “I was just throwing strikes and trying to pound the zone the best I could and let my defense work. The bats were up today and they got the job done.”
Reed Haneberg plated two runs on RBI ground-outs, then delivered another run with a double in the third inning. Austin Selenke had a pair of RBI hits, including a triple in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 5-0.
“We’re going to use the same formula (Friday),” Ebright said. “We’ve got to pitch to contact. No free bases. Defense wins championships, so we can’t give any free bases. If we pitch to contact and play D, with our team speed, we’re going to scratch a few runs across.”
On the other side of the bracket, Goddard lost its opening game 7-0 to St. Thomas Aquinas. The Lions were limited to four hits, as they fell behind 5-0 after two innings and never recovered to conclude a 16-win season.
Wichita State signee Tyner Horn returned from injury to throw one final gem for Eisenhower, a complete-game shutout in a 7-0 victory over Topeka Seaman. Horn allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out 10 batters. He also finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a team-high three RBIs.
Derby moves to 6A semis behind Johnson gem
Derby ace Mitchell Johnson delivered one last gem to send the Panthers through to the Class 6A state baseball semifinals.
If not for pitch-count restrictions, the 6-foot-4 left-hander committed to Cowley County would have likely polished off a complete-game shutout. Instead, Johnson had to settle for everything but the final out in Derby’s 9-0 victory over Topeka at Hoglund Stadium in Lawrence on Thursday.
Johnson allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out 10 in 6⅔ innings to earn the victory, which improved Derby to 15-8 and advanced the Panthers to Friday’s 11 a.m. semifinal against No. 8 seed Blue Valley North (12-11).
Derby’s offense had more than enough run support for Johnson, as six different hitters finished with at least one driven in and the Panthers swiped nine bases. Caden Riojas, Colten Ruedy, Kade Sheldon and Braden Horn all finished with multi-hit games, while Ruedy finished with three stolen bases.
Riojas’ RBI single in the second inning was the game’s only score in the first four innings, then Derby exploded for five runs in the fifth inning and tacked on three more in the seventh.
Collegiate wins pitcher’s duel to advance in 3A state
The one-two punch of Hayden Malaise and Brett Black on the mound were enough to power Wichita Collegiate to a 3-1 win over Sabetha in the opening round of the Class 3A state tournament in Manhattan.
Malaise struck out four hitters in the first two innings, then turned it over to Black, who tossed the final five innings and only allowed one earned run and struck out seven more hitters.
Collegiate took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Black, then an RBI single by Jacob Chappell. After Sabetha cut the lead to 2-1, the Spartans tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning.
The championship defense by Collegiate (20-4) will continue in Friday’s 1:15 p.m. semifinal against No. 1 seed Humboldt (23-1).
McPherson’s offense explodes for opening-round win at 4A
McPherson racked up 11 hits in an 8-3 win over Larned in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament in Salina.
Teegan Haines, Hunter Alvord and Jaytin Gumm all finished with multi-hit performances, as the Bullpups (19-4) advanced to Friday’s 11 a.m. semifinal against Paola (15-8).
Larned rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning with its only three runs of the game, but McPherson answered back immediately with three runs of its own in the bottom-half of the inning. Jaret Myers delivered a two-RBI single, then Ian Razak doubled to left field to bring in another run.
The Bullpups used five different pitchers with none throwing more than two innings to pick up the first win of the tournament.
Little River falls in opening 2-1A state game
In the 2-1A state tournament in Great Bend, top seed Little River lost 12-5 to Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan in its opening game. Logan Renken and Grant Stephens each delivered two-RBI hits, but Little River (20-3) couldn’t rally from a 4-0 deficit early.
