See which Wichita-area girls wrestlers punched their ticket to Kansas state meet
Regional girls wrestling tournaments unfolded across Kansas on Saturday, as Wichita-area teams and standouts battled through loaded brackets to punch their tickets to the state tournament.
With spots on the line, area wrestlers delivered title runs, upsets and dominant performances to secure qualification.
This roundup highlights the regional champions and Kansas high school girls wrestling state qualifiers from Wichita-area programs and how they advanced. The state tournaments are set for Feb. 27-28, with Class 6A at AdventHealth Sports Park in Overland Park, 5A at Hartman Arena in Park City, 4A at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina, and Classes 3-1A at Fort Hays State.
Wichita-area Class 6A girls wrestling regional champions
Campus junior Elayna Evans kept her flawless season intact at 190 pounds, rolling to the regional title to improve to 32-0. The No. 1-ranked wrestler in her weight class needed less than three minutes and 30 seconds of total mat time to pin her way through the bracket, punctuated by a 42-second fall over Wichita Northwest’s Maray Rogers in the championship match.
The Colts made it back-to-back titles one match later when junior Brooklyn Burling captured the regional crown with a second-period pin against Junction City’s Ka’Ori Herring. Ranked No. 3 in Class 6A, Burling improved to 34-3 and added another milestone to her season after finishing fourth at state a year ago.
Derby freshman Presley Beard, the state’s top-ranked wrestler at 120 pounds, continued her breakout campaign with four straight pins to win her regional title and move to 28-0. Her run ended with a second-period pin of Garden City senior Julissa Rodriguez, her highest-ranked in-class challenger.
Maize freshman Alayah Losey also climbed to the top of the podium, edging Garden City’s Kaira Acosta 4-2 in the 110-pound final to improve to 32-2 on the season.
Wichita-area Class 5A girls wrestling regional champions
Kapaun Mt. Carmel flexed its postseason depth, piling up 209 team points to win the title by more than 40 over Hays while qualifying 11 wrestlers for state and crowning four regional champions.
Leading the charge was senior Courtney Nye at 125 pounds, the top-ranked wrestler in 5A and reigning state champion, who improved to 35-2 by securing a third-period pin over Salina Central’s Abbie Slothower, her top in-class challenger, in the finals. Freshman Brynnley Lerch added one of the bracket’s biggest statement runs at 130, entering ranked No. 4 but winning a loaded weight class that included the top-ranked wrestler, finishing with a third-period pin over Great Bend’s Micah Ellegood. Junior Grace Hare (135) and senior Bella Green (145) also delivered titles for the Crusaders with third- and second-period pins, respectively.
Newton produced a trio of champions, headlined by returning state champions Brookelyn Treaster and Avery Hinojos. Treaster, the top-ranked 105-pounder in 5A, needed just over four minutes of combined mat time to record three straight pins, closing with a first-period fall over Kapaun freshman Hailey Estrada to move to 27-4. Hinojos, ranked No. 2 at 115, rolled to a 17-1 technical fall in the final to improve to 33-3. Sophomore Ryah Bristol added the 140 title with a third-period pin and now sits at 28-4.
Maize South sophomore Krislynn Martinez, the defending 5A state champion and current No. 1 at 100, continued her dominance with a 17-1 technical fall over Hays freshman Audrey Yarmer in the finals to improve to 35-2.
Valley Center senior Mikaela Lara delivered one of the tournament’s top upsets, edging top-ranked Emporia standout Alex Castillo 4-2 at 170 pounds with a second-period takedown to move to 34-9, while Andover junior Ashlyn Bachman capped the finals with a third-period pin at 235 to claim her regional crown.
Wichita-area Class 4A girls wrestling regional champions
Circle junior Alexis Wall and Winfield senior Abby Brenn headlined a loaded Class 4A West regional in Augusta with championship runs that highlighted their season-long dominance.
Wall, the top-ranked wrestler at 115, stayed perfect at 24-0 by finishing off her bracket with a second-period pin over Chapman’s Cambree Obermeyer in the finals. After finishing runner-up at 105 at last year’s 4A state meet — and winning a 4A state title at 100 in 2024 — Wall added another postseason statement as she eyes a return trip to the top of the podium.
Brenn, the defending 4A state champion at 190, also looked every bit the favorite, improving to 19-2 with a 14-3 major decision over Hoisington’s Nevaeh Graves in the finals. The top-ranked wrestler at 190 controlled the match throughout to secure her regional crown.
Augusta senior Bracey Golden delivered one of the bracket’s biggest surprises at 120. Unranked entering the tournament, Golden knocked off multiple ranked opponents and capped her run with a 4-2 decision over No. 3-ranked Clay Center wrestler Josey Weller in the finals. Her path included a come-from-behind semifinal win over No. 4 Zoey Owens of El Dorado, using a reversal and nearfall to flip that match.
Wellington produced two champions, led by junior Maddie Fullerton (130), who improved to 34-3 and claimed the title by injury default in the finals. Senior Mikayla Ybarra (145), ranked No. 3, moved to 30-6 after winning her final by medical forfeit.
Other champions included El Dorado junior Aryana Vance (155), who edged Abilene’s Illiana Garcia 2-1 to improve to 35-2, and Nickerson senior Elizabeth Dick (235), the top-ranked wrestler at her weight, who secured a 4-1 decision over Winfield’s Rheya Cook to move to 25-1 after placing third at state last season.
