‘Like a machine’: Andover Central’s Colt Farrow wins Kansas golf championship

A 4-hole stretch of likely the best golf in his career was what Andover Central junior Colt Farrow needed to turn his dream into reality.

Farrow went birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie to open his back-9 of Wednesday’s second round of action at the Class 5A boys state tournament, which created all of the separation he needed to claim individual medalist honors with an 11-under, 36-hole total of 131 strokes at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

“It was like watching a machine work,” Andover Central coach Doug Snyder said. “The whole day, really. He played about as well as he could play. It was just really impressive watching him in that situation with all of that pressure to be able to zone everything out and get in a groove like that. It was a lot of fun to watch.”

Farrow, a Colorado verbal commit, was in a 3-way tie with St. James’ Jacob Fratzel and Bishop Carroll’s Max Farber for the lead with a 4-under round of 67 following Tuesday’s opening round, so he knew he was in contention.

But the Wichita native said the key to his low score — 64 was the lowest round and 131 was the lowest 36-hole score shot by any Kansas high school golfer at a state tournament — was not focusing on where he was on the leaderboard.

“I really didn’t know where I was and honestly I didn’t want to know,” Farrow said. “I was just trying to play my best golf and not worry about anybody else and just focus on what I can control. I just wanted to focus on myself. It’s easy when you get rolling like that to start thinking ahead, but I thought I did a good job of staying focused.”

It was hard to argue with the results, as Farrow said he hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation and only missed two fairways on Wednesday. And with no 3-putts, that’s how Farrow went lower than anyone else on the final day of the state tournament to become just the second boys golfer at Andover Central to win an individual title.

The shot of the day came on his eagle hole when he planted a 235-yard approach shot just three feet from the hole with a 3-iron.

“I’ve put in a lot of hard work and I’m grateful to represent my school, but this isn’t the end of it for me,” Farrow said. “It’s just going to make me work even harder now to get ready for next year and this summer. Winning state was always a big goal of mine, so winning is definitely a surreal feeling.”

Goddard Eisenhower snatched the second-place team trophy with a team of score of 581, which was 29 strokes behind the winning score of St. James and two strokes ahead of third-place Maize South. The Tigers had three finishers in the top-25 in junior Luke Springer (137, fourth), senior Braden Taylor (146, 12th) and senior Easton Kaylor (149, 21st). Other members of the team included junior Jackson Loomis (154), junior Nic Tonnessen (158) and junior Tyler Charles (162).

Maize South came away with a third-place showing behind four top-20 finishers in freshman Conrad Parkhurst (142, sixth), junior Joe Binger (146, 12th), senior Colten Hoover (147, 15th) and senior Laken Matthews (148, 19th). Other team members included junior Cooper Bishop (165) and sophomore Koen Ewertz (166).

Other Wichita-area medalists included Bishop Carroll junior Max Farber (142, sixth), Andover senior Grant Hatzenbuehler (142, sixth), Andover junior Seth Benjamin (143, 10th), Goddard freshman Cohen Museousky (146, 12th) and Andover Central sophomore Xayden Garcia (147, 15th).

Wichita Collegiate boys golf back on top with Class 3A state title

One of the most tradition-rich programs in the state is back on top again, as Collegiate claimed the Class 3A team state championship for the first time since 2015. It is the 20th team title in program history, as the previous 19 were all won in a 26-year span between 1990-2015.

The expected battle between Wichita private schools for the trophy lived up to the hype, as Collegiate’s team score of 644 strokes narrowly edged out Trinity (649) by five shots over the 2-day event at Buffalo Dunes in Garden City.

Collegiate was powered by sophomore Landon Langston, who led the field after the first day and notched a fourth-place finish with 7-over score of 151, and freshman Jacobi Salyers, who tied for the best score in the field for Wednesday’s round and moved up to 10th place with a 36-hole total of 155.

Other members of the title-winning team included junior Charlie Gentile (167), senior Zach Voloch (171), freshman Remy Blanchaert (178) and freshman Torsten Overman (185).

Trinity’s runner-up finish was led by a pair of top-20 finishes in sophomore Cole Palmer (153, sixth) and junior Alex Majors (160, 17th). Other team members for the Knights included freshman Cooper Martsolf (166), junior Jesse Eklund (171), senior Cooper Mathews (174) and junior John Draper (176).

After helping Hesston win a team state title last season, senior Grant Waterson added to his legacy by winning the individual medalist honors with a 3-over score of 147, edging Humboldt’s Connor Newman and Council Grove’s Drew Buchman each by two strokes. Other area medalists included Cheney senior Sydney Schrant (157, 13th) and Kingman senior Kory Meireis (160, 17th).
