Kansas high school state girls wrestling: Maize South freshman finishes perfect year

It’s easy to be deceived by the diminutive size of Maize South freshman Krislynn Martinez.

But she showed she can pack as much power as anyone in a truly dominant performance, recording four straight pins to win the 100-pound championship at the Class 5A girls high school wrestling state tournament at Park City Arena on Saturday.

Not only did Martinez finish a perfect 37-0 season with a state title, she did not allow a single takedown all season. She also kept a clean slate at the state tournament — she was ahead by a combined total of 26-0 on the scoreboard before she notched her pins.

“It’s hard to take any credit for her because she is just that kind of workhorse and her record shows that,” Maize South girls coach Dan Moran said. “She has just been a brute from Day 1. I think people underestimate her strength and that’s played in her favor. There are girls who have left the mat thinking, ‘Holy smokes, what just happened?’”

Martinez has been wrestling since she was 9 years old and that experience has been on full display this season.

Even though she mowed down opponents at the state tournament, she never took any win for granted. Martinez was leading 11-0 in the final against Basehor-Linwood’s Lainie Galvan before getting a pin in the final minute of the match.

“I know my record was really good, but when I step out on the mat, I act like it’s 0-0,” Martinez said. “You never know what could happen.”

That’s why Martinez trained so hard throughout the season to prepare herself for a title run as a freshman.

Despite not allowing a takedown her entire debut season, Martinez said she considered her defense a weakness as recent as last year. She credits her father for the extra training that led to such a dominant freshman campaign.

“My defense kind of sucked last year, so I had to get a lot better over the summer,” Martinez said. “And now my defense is pretty good, but I still have some room to improve it.

“I was very proud to win because I put in so much work for this. My goal was to not get taken down and to go undefeated, so I was able to do both.”

Means finishes career on top of podium with perfect 5A title

After suffering heartbreak the last two years at the state tournament, nothing was stopping Bishop Carroll senior Alexis Means from a storybook ending this year.

Means completed a perfect 37-0 season by winning the 140 title with a first-period pin of Kapaun Mt. Carmel’s Bella Green.

“It means a lot because I’ve put in a lot of hard work,” Means said. “It’s nice to be a state champ because this is what me and all of my siblings have been working toward. Some years it was cut short, but now I finally did it.”

Means said past losses at the state tournament, like taking fourth last year and sixth in 2023, served as motivation to finish strong this season.

“When I lose, I hate it,” Means said. “But whenever I did lose, it was just the drive to get better and to work harder.”
