Hot streak continues for Andover golfer Regan Dusenbery, now 7-under in last 63 holes
No one in Kansas high school golf is playing better right now than Andover freshman Regan Dusenbery, who continued her hot streak on Tuesday by winning the AV-CTL Div. II league title by 10 strokes with an even-par round of 70 at Salina Municipal.
In the last two weeks, Dusenbery has won all four tournaments she has entered and is a combined 7-under in her last 63 holes played. She shot 4-under in a 9-hole event at Auburn Hills, then went 2-under at Cherry Oaks and 1-under at Sim Park last week in 18-hole tournaments.
Not a bad way to enter her first postseason, which begins next Monday when Dusenbery competes in the Class 5A girls golf regional at Emporia Municipal.
“She doesn’t really have any weaknesses,” Andover coach Ryan Harshaw said. “Her driver is good, her short game is good, her putting is good and she has a good mentality for the game. She doesn’t get too high or too low. Even in rounds where she’s not striking it the way she wants to, she still has the mentality to grind and save pars and still post good scores.”
Dusenbery adds to what many consider the strongest era of high school girls golf to be seen in Wichita in decades, joining Kapaun Mt. Carmel sophomore Meg Tilma, Maize sophomore Kinslea Jones, Collegiate sophomore Margaret Ulrich, Bishop Carroll senior Keira Ronsick and Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior Alexa Garrett.
All are among the best golfers in Kansas right now, and it just so happens that Dusenbery, Tilma, Jones, Ronsick and Garrett all compete at the Class 5A level. The competition between them should make the two-day, 36-hole state tournament even more entertaining — there are so many talented golfers who are capable of coming out on top.
Dusenbery, who’s won seven of her eight tournaments this season, deserves to be in the discussion.
“It’s been impressive to watch Regan compete at that high of a level right away,” Harshaw said. “But she knows all of those girls from the junior circuit, so I think that gave her a little added comfort. There’s so much young talent coming through Wichita right now, it’s just really impressive to watch them all go at it.”
