Wichita North top local results from Kansas high school girls wrestling regional

Saturday marked the close of the regional tournaments for Kansas high school girls wrestling that saw several area teams lock up state qualifiers.

The girls wrestling state tournaments will be held at Hartman Arena in Park City (Class 6-5A) and Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina (Class 4-1A) on Feb. 23-24.

Wichita North sends eight to state from home regional

The showdown between the top two-ranked girls teams in Class 6-5A materialized at the regional hosted by Wichita North, as Dodge City edged out the hosts to win the team regional title.

Dodge City, ranked No. 2 in the rankings, gained the advantage with 10 wrestlers headed to the state meet, although Wichita North had eight state qualifiers with two regional champions and five in the finals.

Wichita North junior Rodah Bengi, the top-ranked wrestler at 115, improved to 36-0 on the season and won the regional title, as did teammate Diana Urista at 120. Other state qualifiers for North were Bilhah Bengi (101), Larissa Garcia (109), Sandra Arellano (132), Edna Flores (170), Nathalia Hernandez-Martinez (191) and Emily Jasenthuleanage (235).

Wichita West sophomore Druzzla Johnson improved to 21-0 on the season and won the regional title at 235 another local champion, while Bishop Carroll qualified four for state, including regional champion Karla Martinez (191), as well as Thao Nguyen (120), Cadence Means (138) and Elizabeth Foulk (170).

Other local state qualifiers from the regional included Goddard Eisenhower’s Lainie Burkhart (109) and Mackenzie Popp (155), Goddard’s Audrie Felkins (115) and Ashlynn Goodwin (143), Wichita West’s Samya Slater (115), Northwest’s Rylee Lopez (138) and Samantha Curiel-Dominguez (235), Wichita East’s Haley Somchay (126), Hutchinson’s Samara Jimenez (126), Wichita Wichita South’s Delilah Sherbin (155) and Maize’s Nevaeh Wicker (170).

Derby has three regional champions at Washburn Rural

At the Class 6-5A regional hosted at Washburn Rural, Derby made the most noise with a third-place team finish with four state qualifiers and three regional champions in Amara Ehsa (101), Trinity Williams (170) and Meya Howell (191). The other local regional champion was Newton’s Jaymie Murry (143).

Kapaun also qualified four wrestlers in Aalyra Arguelles (132), Jayla Johnson (138), Gianna Redcorn (170) and Catherine Burr (191), while Valley Center is sending three to state in Carysa Corrado (115), Grace Timmons (155) and Cheyenne Blackwood (170).

Other local state qualifiers from the regional included Wichita Southeast’s TaNayaih Hunt (109) and Alivia Wilson (115), Wichita Heights’ Makenzie Buyno (120), Andover’s Olivia Randle (132), Derby’s Maddie Snowbarger (132) and Arkansas City’s Lily Pendergrass (143).

Wellington has three regional champions at Remington

Battling in the same regional as the top-ranked team in Class 4-1A, Wellington still emerged with three regional champions from the Remington regional.

Junior Anna Cullens continued her undefeated season with a regional title at 101, while Nexy Young won at 115 and Kaitlyn Hain won the title at 138. Teammate Averie Burns also reached the finals and qualified at 235 to help Wellington to a second-place team finish.

As expected, Pratt ran away with the team title and qualified nine wrestlers with four regional champions in Jadyn Thompson (120), Keimarla Thompson (132), Livia Swift (143) and Ava Thompson (191).

Other local regional champions were Mulvane’s Leiannah Landreth (109), Winfield’s Mikayla Konrade (126), Douglass’ Jewella Cokeley (155) and McPherson’s Ciara Rawson (235).

Smoky Valley qualified five wrestlers to state in Kenzlie Crain (101), Taytum Reed (120), Lydia Peterson (155), Rylie Tolle (170) and Madi Tolle (191), while Mulvane qualified four in Landreth, Jericka Stiles (138), Kammie Schanz (155) and Loren Gonzalez (235).

Other area state qualifiers were Rose Hill’s Brooklynn Page (170) and Payton Sholander (191), El Dorado’s Elle Vinson (101) and Bella Wernli (126), McPherson’s Amethyst Hale (115) and Arriana Gross (132), Augusta’s Jill High (126) and Emma Otsuka (138), Douglass’ Roxie Cokeley (115) and Tyelor Rozell (120), Bluestem’s Payton Burton (109) and Cadence Williamson (120), Circle’s Katelyn Schmidt (143), Buhler’s Emilie Schweizer (191), Winfield’s Hannah Selle (109), Remington’s Lillian Wagner (132), Haven’s Trista Rogers (143), Norwich’s Marissa Murray (155) and Chaparral’s Nakietta Macis (235).
