Introducing the 2021 Wichita Eagle high school girls golf All-Metro team
The Wichita area featured some of the best high school girls golfers in Kansas this season and that star power is highlighted on The Wichita Eagle’s 2021 All-Metro girls golf team.
The All-Metro squad consists of six of the top golfers and a top coach from Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties, based on season-long performance with an emphasis on postseason finishes.
Maize freshman Kinslea Jones, who completed an undefeated season with 10 straight tournament titles capped by the Class 5A state championship, earned the nod for Golfer of the Year honors on the All-Metro team.
Below is the full team:
2021 Wichita Eagle All-Metro girls golf team
Alexa Garrett, Kapaun Mt. Carmel junior
Garrett was the model of consistency this season, placing in the top-five in her first eight starts of the season and topping it off with a seventh-place finish at the Class 5A state tournament. After helping lead the Crusaders to somewhat of a surprising state title in 2020, Garrett was a key part, along with Eleanor Navarro, that made up a dominant force that ended with an undefeated season and state title in 2021.
Kinslea Jones, Maize freshman
A better debut season could not be scripted for Jones, who won all 10 of her tournaments this season capped by a Class 5A state championship over a loaded field. The granddaughter of Wichita golfing legend Grier Jones, Kinslea delivered another highlight by breaking the school record with a 7-under round of 64 to win the AV-CTL Division I title. Jones edged Kate Tilma out by three strokes to win the 5A title with a 36-hole total of 148.
Keira Ronsick, Bishop Carroll junior
With the City League as good as its ever been, Ronsick helped make the league competitive outside of Kapaun’s stars by finishing in the top-six in the first eight starts of the season, including one tournament victory. Ronsick topped it off with a steady performance at the Class 5A state tournament, where she finished in a tie for ninth place with a 36-hole total of 165.
Kate Tilma, Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior
Already one of the most accomplished female golfers in Kansas history, Tilma played her first season of high school golf this year with the arrival of her sister, Meg, a freshman. Kate made history last summer by becoming the first female golfer to win the Kansas Junior Amateur and Kansas Amateur in the same year and recently signed with Kansas State. She won five tournaments with a season-low round of 65 to claim the City League title, while she finished runner-up at the Class 5A state tournament and helped lead Kapaun to an undefeated season capped with a team state championship.
Meg Tilma, Kapaun Mt. Carmel freshman
One of the many exciting class of 2025 prospects in the area, Meg Tilma is the younger sister of Kate. Both have earned reputations as elite prospects in the summer circuit. Playing on one of the most talented teams of all time, Meg was able to win one tournament with a season-low round of 71 and finished third at the Class 5A state tournament. She also helped lead Kapaun to an undefeated season capped by a team state title.
Margaret Ulrich, Collegiate freshman
When it came to the postseason, no one was better than Ulrich. The Collegiate freshman won the AV-CTL Divisions III-IV title by 11 strokes with a round of 74, then took home the regional title and made it a clean sweep by pulling away on the second ay to win the Class 3-1A state championship by seven strokes with a 36-hole total of 151. After going toe-to-toe with many local stars included on this list, Ulrich took her game to a new level when the stakes were raised.
Marie Thomas, Kapaun Mt. Carmel coach
Opposing coaches joked with Thomas this season that her job was done once she successfully got her six golfers to the tournament. Kapaun was just that dominant, as the Crusaders finished off an undefeated season with their second straight Class 5A state championship. Even without its best in the two-day event, Kapaun still won the team title by nearly 90 strokes. No one could match the firepower of Kapaun’s top four golfers in Kate Tilma, Meg Tilma, Alexa Garrett and Eleanora Navarro, while Madelyn Engel and Sophia Gimino were good golfers in their own right and helped solidify what some considered was the most talented high school girls golf team they’ve ever seen.
